I think it's fair enough that the big five have their own category

All five terrestrial channels were shortlisted.....

Right - someone got paid for "shortlisting" 5 channels to, ermmm 5.

These awards are a joke! Next week I think I will award myself one and slap it on the top of my CV.

Although why there should be seperate catagories for DTT, DSat and DCab is beyond me since most of the channels are the same.

More categories == More awards == More award sponsors

The best way for BBC1 to demonstrate why it won this accolade would be to show some dignity and not brand its idents with anything other than "Subtitles" and/or a region name. With so many channels displaying the names of whatever awards they have won on their idents, it won't be long before these titles look devalued.

Whilst I'm not a fan of extra clutter on idents, do you not think if they don't include a mention of Channel Of The Year, and all other broadcasters do, the public perception will be that the BBC never win such awards?

Given continued pressure for the Beeb to justify its licence funded status, I think it's important that viewers are made aware of such awards.

Good point. I think that there needs to be some sort of acknowledgement on screen that BBC One has won the award but then again I don't think it should be over-promoted. Couldn't just a handful of idents (perhaps two or three) be branded with channel of the year and the rest just remain as they are? This way the BBC would be promoting that they've won but not going too over the top.

As for the awards themselves I wouldn't say that any of the conventional terrestial channels are worthy of the award to be fair. BBC Two has some interesting documentaries and other programmes except the rest of its schedule is full of repeats; ITV1 has a decent daytime line-up but quite a lot of the rest of the channel is rubbish; Channel 4, like BBC Two, has some interesting programmes but can be quite sensationalised at times; Five isn't really a contender; BBC One showcases good programmes but the daytime schedule is boring and lacks variety.

If I had to choose a winner, I'd have probably given it to either BBC One or Channel 4.

You can hear it now can't you... "next up on BBC-1 channel of the year find out what's going for a song in the Antiques Roadshow. But first the main news. This is BBC-1 channel of the year. The one to watch..."

I'd be happier if they came up with a nice, creative solution. For example, as the swirly rings appear in the logo form-up, the words 'Channel Of The Year' could appear, before re-animating to to finish on the standard BBC One logo.

At least then you wouldn't end up with lots of messages on screen at once - a bit like how BBC Two did it a few years ago, where the purple BBC TWO box turned round to reveal a Channel Of The Year message.

Oh for the days of the mirror globe (where a special ident plate would have been required) or the COW (where a "Channel Of the Year" circuit board would have had to be made - and on cost grounds they wouldn't have bothered!

Phil Vowels' announcement into The One Show (paraphrased): "It's Test The Nation in half an hour, so to get you started, which TV channel has just been named Channel of the Year thanks to you? Yes it's the one to watch..."

And another into EastEnders, something like "...The home of Spooks, [a show I forgot], and of course EastEnders, this is channel of the year, BBC One!"

Rather than just slap a caption on the idents, it would be nice if they just had a slick 30sec promo that popped up every so often showing off some of the best BBC One shows over the past year.

Considering that it was announced on Saturday and today is a bank holiday, mentioning it in announcements is the best that can happen
