Channel of the Year Awards

Programme of 2005: Jamie's School Dinners
Industry Player of the Year: Richard Woolfe, LivingTV (a very popular choice)
Channel of the Year - Non Terrestrial: BBC Three
TV Personality of the Year: Jonathan Ross
Channel of the Year - Terrestrial: BBC One

Can't disagree with Jamie's School Dinners. Don't know much about Richard Woolfe, but LivingTV has been making big moves over the last 12 months - and though he's not a personal favourite, I won't argue with Jonathan Ross.

But Terrestrial Channel of the Year - BBC ONE?
Non-Terrestrial Channel of the Year - BBC THREE?

Do the judges watch TV?

BBC1 is worse than it's ever been. It's poorly scheduled day and night with far too many cheap documentaries - and I can't currently think of any flagship programmes it has!

And as for BBC3. If re-running Little Angels every few weeks and showing the same episode of Little Britain and Two Pints... around five times a week is considered to be the best channel, I'd hate to think what is second best!

They've had a couple of break out hits - most notably Casanova - but really, how can any one regard BBC3 as the best non-terrestrial channel.

Personally C4 wins terrestrial channel of the year for me without a doubt! Just looking at our local TV guide earlier today and for each day this week all but one of the "Pick of the Day" programmes is from C4!

As for non-terrestrial - that's more tricky - but even BBC Four is better than BBC Three!

I don't understand. Is this an 'award ceremony' of some sort?

Sorry - the awards are from the MediaGuardian Edinburgh TV Festival.

That's hilarious. What were they watching because it certainly wasn't BBC One or Three. Both are dire.

I agree, Channel 4 is easily the best terrestrial channel. There's ALWAYS something decent on. Very few (perhaps even none) of their programmes can be considered bad tv.

Quelle surprise. You don't need to tell us that anymore, you've said it often enough to drive a sane man to t'other side.

Other arguments aside, BBC THREE is a terrestrial channel! Does no one understand the meaning of the word 'terrestrial' any more?

*ahem*.. that's the MediaGuardian Edinburgh International Television Festival.

I was a bit surprised at BBC Three's win too; they were up against Sky One, BBC Four, Living TV and UKTV History. Of that lot, I'd have expected BBC Four to get it, just for the sheer number of times I've accidentally stumbled across programmes which entirely fascinated me. But I think the 'accidental' part might be its problem - I think the BBC sometimes regard the programming they commisson for the channel as too niche to properly promote.

Also, apparently the BBC Three showreel shown at the awards was pretty impressive and seemingly showed off a lot of good stuff. I still can't quite think what it would be, though..

I suspect C4's dependence on imported shows would count against it. Lost, Desperate Housewives, ER, Friends, The Simpsons etc. are all good shows, but nothing really to do with C4 - apart from them signing the cheques to purchase them...

That's not very fair. A lot of hard work goes into the selection of imported programmes, especially for prime time slots. It's not as simple as flashing your cash about.

I wasn't saying it was. However unless you have decent editorial control over imported shows - you are just playing a jigsaw puzzle that someone else has made. If you commission your own shows, you're painting the picture.

Well I think Channel 4 as out done everyone with it Programmers of the year. Jamie School dinner, I think it what counts.

What wrong with Channel 4 having international show? Dame BBC has got a couple! Mainly cheap US comedy. With channel 4 importuning shows it can fill up the schuldes with decent programs with having to fill it up with repeats

At least channel 4 ask for quality programmers unlike ITV, which show like, countdown you are what you eat, right now the nelson tribute. The amounts of documentary out do the other channel. Channel 4 has a hell of a lot LESS Repeat that other channel, and the only thing to get repeated are show People want to see again or documentary that are great.
