There were reports way back in January 2001 that Lorraine Heggessey, Controller of BBC1, was unhappy with the BBC1 Balloon Idents, and wanted them replaced with something else.
Does anyone know if the balloons are to be ditched, if so, when and whatn are they to be replaced with?

I'm sure no one outside the BBC (and probably Lambie-Nairn) knows whether with the balloon idents are staying or not.
If the best Lorraine Heggessy can come up with is a night of programmes about text messages, I dread to think what kind of idents she'd like.
Yes, it is widely believed the balloons ain't gonna fly no more, and no-one really knows what they are being replaced with. The controller said she wanted BBC ONE to have a 'tougher' (or words to that effect) image, whatever that means.
With the prospect of a family of BBC THREE and BBC FOUR as well as ONE and TWO, it could be the case that BBC ONE takes a numerical approach to make way for more standardisation. But this is all speculation, and nobody knows anything for sure. We'll just have to wait and see.....
Yeah James, spill the beans - that is if you know anything we don't?
Bye for now

All I know is the balloons almost certainly
will not
be around this time next year.
As for designs I believe it is still an on-going project, but as the BBC itself has said the new idents will have a much stronger brand to promote BBC1, in an ever increasing, competitive multichannel environment.
Although I hate the balloons, I do love the music!

BBC 3 and BBC 4 will definately be numerical, ie. not BBC THREE and BBC FOUR. I'm not sure about BBC ONE, but BBC TWO will stay, as there is already a graphical '2'.

Does anyone else see a numerical theme in the latest BBC Choice idents? Three orange blocks, channel three?
Have a look at this ident I knocked up:

Do you think they will simply change the name at the bottom?
