Nice ideas martin, I think BBC 1 should stay as it is, and BBC 2 should but with a few new ones, and they can get rid of 'Water', BBC 3 can be based around 3 objects, but maybe not the current blocks, the edited hearts seam so much better now! and BBC 4 how about... I'll post an image later.
As for the balloons, I've never liked them as great deal but does it really matter..?
Is Heggessey expecting more people to tune into BBC 1 if they ditch the balloons? Why on Earth would they?
It's the quality of programming that matters and whilst the Beeb produces a hell of a lot more decent programming than ITV, they advertise things (dare I use that word) in the wrong way. Making a fuss about the crappy programmes that serve a minority interest and not the truely excellent stuff, which always seems to go quietly, and is only picked up by The Independent's TV review.
A new 'hard' image for BBC 1 (whatever that may mean), isn't going to help at all. Viewers turn in to see the programmes and not a balloon floating around all over the UK; OK so we're the exception there! But seriously, revamping the station with new presentation isn't going to increase viewers.
And she seems a little confused. She wants to get away from the 'nannying force' but wants to make the station 'warmer' and give it 'the softer approach'.
So, role on the next identity crisis for BBC 1.
If any channel is having an identity crisis its Sky One, they have different idents all the time and they are all rubbish.
Sky One's idents are rubbish but they reflect the season we're in (Spring / Summer etc..) The actual logo has been used for quite a while now, so they seem to have settled down with one.
Sky have been having an identity crisis since 1998 - when they decided to break with tradition and give each channel its own unique look. Sky was best in 1993 or 1996, when all channels followed a generic Sky feel.
But the fact remains, BBC One will have another identity crisis in a few years time. Probably because it doesn't know what it wants to be, just like BBC News. Nice and modern looking - boring and old style presenting.
Although I don't have the BBC 'normal' channels (just World and Prime) I think the balloon idents are the greatest idea so far. It has that modern and warm feel (the red/yellow colors from the baloon)...
Personally I don't think they should change BBC Choice to Three and Knowledge to Four, wouldn't the latter shock with C4?

I don't think so, we haven't had any problems with the co-existance of BBC ONE and Sky One, or BBC TWO and ITV2 (unless you're Des Lynam of course).
I agree with Asa, giving the channels numbers rather than names should help to increase their profile and strengthen the brand (although I think the numbers should still be spelt out in the current fashion).
