Absolutely anything can be seen as offensive these days. People really need to get a grip on reality - If I was to be offended by an ident it would have to look like this:

I totally agree. I don't understand how anybody could be offended by a Television Ident.

I certainly don't get how someone could be offended by the sea in the background of ballet after the Tsunami Confused

The last time I saw Ballet, prior to last night, was back on a Monday in October ahead of the ten o' clock news on BBC ONE Yorkshire but I can't remember what the headline was.
I was rather surprised that it was used ahead of MOTD, all though I thought that one of the 'news' idents (Acrobats, Capoeira, Skateboarders, Tai Chi) would have been used because they are more appropiate for serious programming and serious events.

But what would happen if Parliament was attacked by terrorists and Big Ben fell onto members of the public outside killing them instantly?

If that happened I'd imagine it would be ITN News that would have more to worry about than BBC1.

Of course, during the Balloons era, there were talks about what BBC1 Presentation would do should Richard Bransons attempt to fly around the world in a balloon ended in tragedy, which it very nearly did!

AFAIK, the 'ribbons' BBC animation (used on Videos & DVDs) can be used as an ident when channels join together for a particularly sombre incident (it's predecessor with the old BBC logo was used in this way when Princess Diana died and BBC1/2/World were all showing the same thing). Now, why not just make a re-edit of this with 'BBC ONE' on it. Then, there's their sombre ident, much more suitable than a shot of ballet dancers with cocked legs, and of course since it's independent of the channel's usual branding, whenever new channel identities are conceived they won't need to worry about how to use them in serious situations (although based on previous events they seemingly didn't worry about that with the dancers any way).

There used to be a ribbons "family ident" intended to unite the channels in the event of a big recall, but it fell into disuse quite a while ago.

Did the Ballet ident appear before Easties omnibus started

They seem to be using it before every news programme and then before the programme that follows the news.

Has anyone seen Festival or Haka today?!

Off topic a moment, but it looks like there is no special sombre ident in ITV1's package this time, as the usual news ident is serious enough

back in the good old days central, carlton, westcountry and htv would have dug out the sunrise ident. with it's haunting music accompanied by the announcers calling the station "carlton television for the central region" instead of the less grand "carlton". it really did give the occasion a sense of importance that the current itv and bbc 1 packages do not.

Yes, I really used to like that sunrise/sombre ident. It was really haunting and you knew something was up. Even the sombre ITV1 idents from the celeb era were quite erie but rarely used. There doesn't seem to be an equivalent in the current batch! But im sure I remember there was a newsy ident with slightly more relaxed music that was used last year for some bad news (cant remember what news though!)

Yes I saw Festival at 13.25. I was surprised jumping up and down celebrating is appropiate for the occasion but saying that I've just seen Masai used.
Out of interest why were you commenting on Haka?

Ballet has been used for the news at 17.40 and for the programme looking at the Pope at 17.55. Was it used ahead of Songs of Praise?

Suprised to see it myself, I thought they had totally withdrawn the ident.

Anyway this new man coming into BBC One apparently "loathes" the dancers (Sounds like he has some sense)
