It's appearing around the middle of this year (at least in Australia) when Foxtel launches its new HD platform (which looks quite similar to Sky HD - not surprising given that News Corp own a 33% share).

BBC Worldwide anounced this sometime in 2006 did they not? ISTR it was along with the new Knowledge/Entertainment channels.

Just thinking about display and tranmsission options - does Sky's HD channels broadcast in 1080i or is some of it in 720? Is any of it 720p?

BBC HD is broadcast entirely at 1080i, as I believe are the rest of the Sky HD channels.

If I were the BBC, I'd concentrate on making sure they had a few more programmes. BBC HD is becoming more and more like Jools Holland HD.

All the HD satellite services in the UK are 1080i.

The BBC shoot on 1080/50i, 1080/25p and some 720p - using HDCam, DVCPro HD and HDCam SR, but they deliver to BBC HD presentation on 1080/50i HDCam.
