Last time I checked, we still have BBC Entertainment in The Netherlands. The channel is not very useful, since almost everyone has access to BBC One and BBC Two (BBC Three and BBC Four are behind a paywall, generally). I don't consider BBC Entertainment an addition to those channels, to be honest.

BBC Four itself has a reasonably strong brand and brand awareness.

A bit of a shame to see the BBC Knowledge name disappear again, but on the plus side that leaves it open for BBC Four to use the name again when BBC Three closes (erm, I mean "moves online")

Not sure I see the reasoning there? Don't see why having different domestic and international channels with the same brand would be that much of a problem. Websites would be routed via IP (so international viewers typing bbc.co.uk/bbcknowledge would get routed to the bbc.com version?)

It would be a little confusing internally - but no more so than different versions of the same international channels with the same name?

Whether the BBC uses BBC Knowledge domestically as a brand wouldn't be linked to international usage I wouldn't have thought?

It was just a throwaway comment, a way to connect the dropping of the Knowledge brand internationally to my suggestion of reusing the name when the BBC Three brand disappears. I don't know the ins and outs of BBC brand management! Smile

Judging by the map on http://www.bbceurope.com/ , Poland and the Nordics are the only territories in Europe that receive the full line-up of international BBC channels. BBC Knowledge is also available in Italy, Turkey and Romania, while most countries still only get BBC Entertainment.

I wouldn't be surprised if BBC Entertainment remained in the other countries for the time being. The versions for Poland and the Nordics had been running a proto-BBC Brit schedule for some time before the relaunch, but the Pan-European version available elsewhere still has a more varied schedule that resembles BBC Prime: http://europe.bbcentertainment.com/schedule/

Here in Canada we have BBC World News (in SD 14:9, at least on my provider - Shaw Direct) and BBC Canada (also SD but usually letter-boxed 16:9), which is a (very) poor mans version of BBC America. This is due to the CanCon regulations as-well as the fact that many other channels also air BBC content, either because they have paid more for it ore perhaps co-produced it. CanCon has recently changed, however, I haven't yet got my head around how. It remains to be seen if it will affect the channels output in future.

BBC Brit HD and BBC Earth HD starts tomorrow in the Nordics, BBC Lifestyle remains the same and in SD as does BBC World News, I think Telenor have gone for the pan European version of BBC Earth as it has a Hungarian and Turkish soundtrack.

Do you still have the joys of property shows with Colin and Justin, made especially for the Canadian market?

They did a while ago but I've not seen them lately. Not that I watch much of it. The BBC stuff I like (things like Coast etc.) are all on other channels. Knowledge Network (BC's public broadcaster) is particularly good for both BBC and ITV shows. Mike Holmes seems to appear a lot on BBC Canada lately, I guess to help satisfy CanCon. They had quite a bit of Kirstie and Phil not too long back also, and some Come Dine With Me, but they also seem to have disappeared. Here's the current schedule (using Shaw's terrible schedule grid): http://www.bbccanada.com/Schedule/.

I wasn't aware that's what the BBC's international channels were for - to advertise the UK.
