Hi all, got back from my holiday a few days ago and discovered BBC Prime has changed to BBC entertainment (which was in 2009 according to wiki)
Are we able to access BBC entertainment, lifestyle, knowledge in the UK? and if so what are the frequencies?
Unfortunately not. BBC Entertainment and Knowledge are not FTA anymore. BBC World can still be accessed on Astra 19.2 for free though.
The old Sky analogue satellite position? Strange, it wasn't there when Sky was.
Not really. When Sky were there all the broadcasts at 19.2 (with the exception of some radio and TV sound) were analogue. That meant one channel per transponder pretty much. So you had around 60 analogue channels (quite a few encrypted, a few in D2MAC rather than PAL)
Now there are lots of digital channels at 19.2 (just as there are at 28.2, 13.0 and most other popular slots - analogue is really only in use for legacy territories with very high analogue penetration - basically Germany I think) This means you can have hundreds of channels in the same space - it's what drove the switch from analogue to digital.
This means that there are far more channels - as you can carry lots of SD services on a single HD transponder (and a smaller number of HD services)
When Sky were analogue and on the Astra 1 satellite at 19.2 - most broadcasting was analogue and BBC World was on an Intelsat and/or Hotbird.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Astra_19.2%C2%B0E#Channels might help explain - it shows the timeline of each transponder at 19.2
These days BBC World is a common channel in the basic line-up of satellite services across Europe - just as Sky News and CNNi also are. This means you'll find BBC World on most European popular positions (19.2, 13.0, 4.8, 0.8W etc.) - though it may be encrypted. *** EDIT TO REMOVE 28.2 TYPO ***
