BBC World's Excellent Coverage of Madrid

(March 2004)

I've just watched the BBC World News bulletin broadcast on my local PBS station (I live in the Americas), and it struck me as very, very excellent reporting.

The news wasn't just of a protest against terrorism, but rather it conveyed to me what it would be like to be in any major Spanish city where a protest occurred. That's very good work.

Could someone please capture an episode of the BBC World News (all 30 minutes) over the next 12 hours, say, since I wasn't able to record these reports? I would very much appreciate it; I can be contacted via PM. Thanks.

Yes, I commented on BBC World's coverage yesterday in another thread - it has been excellent for the last two days. I saw David Jessel yesterday when they were in full breaking news mode, and he handled it very well. I think he's one of those presenters that excel at major news. He seems to have the authority to carry it off, just like Nik Gowing. Presentation wise, the relaunch has been proven to be effective in my opinion. They've made effective use of the ticker in conjunction with the astons, and I was glad that they scrapped all their scheduled programmes yesterday to provide continous news coverage. There were plenty of reports, lives, studio guests providing analysis, and the likes. The only downside is that they have to take breaks every quarter of an hour, but at least they're only a couple of minutes or less each time, and I suppose they have to get money somehow!

I haven't seen much of News 24 over the last two days - can anyone comment on their coverage of the bombs?

Well a lot of the stuff from Madrid was simulcast on both channels, with World and News24 taking in turns to be lead gallery. You can tell which one is leading by the location of the locator.

Ah right, a few years ago, it was easier to determine which gallery was leading because World used its vamps and titles, which were different to N24's. Now, they seem to be using N24's vamp whether it's coming from N24 or World's gallery.
