Isonstine has the current 'BBC World News Special Opening Titles' here: http://www.isonstine.plus.com/listen_room.html

Asa also has the current 'BBC World Special Opening Titles' here: http://www.tvhome.co.uk/bbc_world.shtml

Are these
a) files for the same purpose (news intro), of which two exist and will be used for different things
b) files for the same purpose (news intro), of which one is unofficial
c) entirely different, i.e. the first being the intro into the news programme and the second being an extended special ident?

They sound very similiar although there are clear differences between them!

they are the same theme

they are used when someone dies or similar events.

IS the NEWS24 special official or not?

(This from someone who has only seen BBC World once)

I now understand why they use it but how often and is it just played to replace the ordinary titles or is the whole presentation changed?

But they're not the same! They're different lengths, and although they are based on similar ideas, they sound quite different!

you might have the closing theme, but i'll have a listen

If it's the closing theme, it's the one I nabbed from a real video file I got from somewhere. I gotta ask Asa to credit me that one Smile

Just downloaded them all and Ian is quite correct -- the two opening themes are of the same style but with different arrangement.

The that I've got is for extreme cases. If a famous person dies, or a massive disaster like the Concorde crash.

I think the one Asa has is just a version of titles for another special event, although I will happily be proved wrong. Smile

Right, who shall we bump off first to put this to the test...? Wink

The one that James has was used when Demark voted against joining the Euro. I remember it because Nik Gowing presented and it was also on both World and News 24.

I don't THINK Asa's is a BBC original. The timing is wrong in some places and the beginning sounds remarkably like the extended closing music I captured. Might be wrong.

Does anyone by any chance have any video for when these were used? I remember seeing the sad one at 7am on N24 one day when the King? of Syria died but it was so early and I was so tired I didn't tape it Sad
