Does anyone think the vamp they are using today, the one also used overnight, follows really badly into the World News ident? It really is too high pitched for the ident. The proper BBC World News one is much better. They could have used that one today, the one with no thunderclaps, used at *.15 on BBC World normally. They could have therefore used this at *.15 today, followed by a decent tag, instead of the mixture of overnight vamp and News 24 tag!! Now they've resorted to using the N24 vamp at *.15, even on the joint bulletins!

Ha ha! How many times have I heard that be said! Smile
The reason the overnight vamp is used is because of the staccato stabs at the top of it - it allows time for World Pres to opt-in and to mask the reverb from N24's countdown clock.

Aah thats right I'd forgotton about that - thanks TP!

I didn't quite understood what you meant, so bascially what you are saying that is in letterbox format, so bascially anything 4:3 is stretched to 16:9 like Sky News etc?

Yeah, everything gets anamorphically squashed to 16:9, regardless of it's original format. There are 4:3 channels on the distribution system which have already been converted to correct 16:9 ratios. Depends if the newsroom viewer is looking at the raw incoming feed, or the adjusted one

Now I understand, ah so it is 16:9, it is a little hard to tell if it's 14:9 or 16:9. One more question is the BBC World feed on the distribution system 14:9 stretched to a 16:9 frame, as I can't see any extra picture on the sides!

Depends what feed you're watching.
If you're viewing the Wolrd News studio it's already 16:9
If you're watching BBC World, depending on the version you're watching it's either squashed to 16:9, or converted to real 16:9

Quoting various peple regarding the use of Overnight headline bed being higher.

I see why you use it now, but I can't see why it was made higher to start with!

World music:
Countdown in Bflat
Headlines bed in Bflat to Aflat
Ident in Bflat

News 24 music:
Countdown in Bflat
Headlines bed in Bflat
Ident in Bflat (with Ab bed at end when presenters speak).

Yet the Overnight headline bed appears to be a semi tone higher (although it's not even an exact semitone - it's not on a real note!) - why use a different note?  Is it purely to make it sound different so that you BBC lot know that it's not the World one?  Why not have it in Bflat like the rest of the News headline beds?

---

Also: doesn't all this swapping round seem odd for World viewers (i.e. the swap of presenter/studio for when it's our night (but some folk's day), the UK news today, the different presenter they get in between bullitens for their short summaries).

Also won't News 24 viewers wonder what's going on this weekend with different idents, programme names ('BBC News', not 24) and studio.

Far from being unprofessional, I believe it would almost be professional to explain what's going on!  When Phillippa does speicals from America she says 'welcome to this special programme broadcasting around the globe on BBC World and in the UK on BBC News 24' - this explains the sudden change of appearance to News 24 viewers!

I believe presenters should spend a couple of seconds saying 'This is BBC News, broadcasting both in the UK and arond the globe on BBC World' or something simple like that.  I believe it's treating the viewers like fools if you don't tell them why they keep seeing these changes.  If I didn't visit this forum I wouldn't know why they're doing it!

At the end of the day, does it really matter why it's happening? I think it's only members of this forum who are bothered by it

There is a simple explanation for it, but i'd better not say coz i'll get my ears boxed in, never mind other bodily parts attacked! Smile

They used to do that back in the flag days did they not

THIS IS BBC NEWS BROADCASTING THE UNITED KINGDOM ADN ACCROSS THE GLOBE

or whatever.

Plus
1. Why is there a STUPID live thing on the Washington specials and
2. Why does that studio always seem VERY dark and badly lit?

I really don't think the public care .... they just want the news. It's only 'anoraks' like us that care. My Mum and Dad will hardly have noticed that it's a different studio or different music in the headline bed.

That is so true Nicky, my parents are exactly the same! I'm saying, 'thank God, they've used the right bed' and mum and dad don't even know what I'm on about!! Let alone studios!

i like the world set (i never seen it bofore) and i like the newsroom background

does anyone know if there was a newflash on BBC1 or ITV for the Birmingham bomb

the newsroom behind bbc world looked pretty busy overnight - is it just because of the bomb, or is it always that busy? (i realise world joins n24 most nights)
