Sky's way of breaking the news is very effective, it catches your attention to the screen.
However, I will now compliment (in a way, someone else) - CNN.
I have to watch CNN when abroad, if they don't have Sky News. You know when there's BREAKING NEWS cos when there's an advert/programme in progress, the screen SUDDENLY GOES BLACK for a few secs & then you're left in suspense to find out what it is. Then that black & gold BREAKING NEWS graphic so familar internationally that has been used since year dot of CNN.

Yes CNN's way of breaking news is actually quite good but they are actually quite similar to News24, and sometimes very slow in comparision to rivals.
For example they broke the news of the Jerusalem buidling collapse and the Nepal Royal family killings to a schedule, silly really.

I don't know why any of the Brit networks don't have any 'Breaking News' animations. CNN's is legendary over here and so is NBC's 'Special Report' titles. MSNBC's 'Breaking News' or 'Live Coverage' titles are also VERY good, especialy the music.
BTW, CNN just relaunched their programme promo graphics. They feature the Gill Sans font. They look pretty good, a good improvement on the previous ones.

We don't really have breaking news idents as there isn't much need for them.
I have seen the NBC Special Report ident and graphics and they are VERY eyecatching!
However, as most of the news channels over here broadcast mainly news, instead of the constant politics programmes etc over in the US there is little need to directly interupt news reports with breaking news.
The Sky Breaking News ident was used for a few years though and it was rather good, but it was axed as they couldn't find the point of it!
The Sky News Breaking News aston is on my site --

We used to have 'NEWSFLASH' displayed on screen for a number of years, until Sky came along.
Then networks realised that they actually could not get away with calling it a newsFLASH because more often than not it had broken on the respective 24 hour news channel before!
now they are just simply generic captions with 'BBC NEWS REPORT' displayed on them.
And remember you have a much bigger country, there isn't actually that much breaking news over here!
Take for example the explosion at the Arndale Centre.
I was at home watching Sky at the time and turned over to Granada later.
Sky broke the news literally 2 mins after the bomb and reported a bomb scare beforehand, I presume because of the Manchester bureau team heard it go off.
Then 10 mins later Granada rushed 2 presenters into the news studio and started broadcasting for a few hours the BBC did a similar thing, first taking a national news report then a local one.
But they cannot call it breaking news as this would seem odd to people who have already seen it!

For one of the school shootings in US last year Sky had a BREAKING NEWS sequence that lasted about 5 secs (inserted to interupt a package) & a big BREAKING NEWS graphic filling the bottom of the screen. It was never seen again.
I was in the city centre in the aftermath of the Manchester bomb.

Chesh, FYI, if you've seen the most recent NBC Special Report titles -- the MSNBC ones have the same graphics but with a different title music
THe Special Report music is the same music for 'Meet the Press' -- the music is extraordinary -- the most 'newsy' music that i've ever heard -- it's called 'The Pulse' (by John Williams) BTW. I have it, but I downloaded it from Napster (before it got REALLY crappy)
