Well I heard it happen about two Fridays ago. Basically, what I heard, was the breaking news sting played as the 'out to break' sting, then in place of the usual break, they went to Patrick O'Connell in New York for the business, then after he finished, they breaking news sting played again as the 'back from break' sting.

Yeah they do use the 'Breaking News' bumper for World News at 6.00 pm ET. I think they started using this when Mishal Hussein (spelt wrong, sorry) took over from Hayton.

That means they only show the Breaking News ident on one of the BBC America buletins, but why??

I can't understand why they use the Breaking News ident for the BBC America bulletins - its not just specially breaking for them is it? As I can't view BBC World, does it actually have 'BREAKING NEWS' on the sting, or is it blank?

Yesterday they used that sting you're talking about Rob, and it was used for live coverage of George Bush's speech! The break filler was interupted and it played with 'LIVE COVERAGE' displaying on the ident, and Anita done some talking before we got to see the speech.

The same happens at 12am too.

We call it an 'invisible break'.  Basically the bulletins are taken by BBC America and the American PBS network.  Everyone but PBS wants a centre commercial break.

So it works like this...
Pres. takes a break and opt's out of the sting.  BBC America take the break too, but PBS don't want any break.  The feed that goes to America is switched so that the news studio is still being fed across the pond throughout the duration of the break, and news provide a pre-packaged business report that is only seen on PBS.  Pres. and BBC Am opt back in at the end of the break.

Similar to what happens during the first hour of TWT when World pres. opts out of news and WBR while it continues on BBC 1/N24.

Why do BBC World play the 'Breaking News' sting during these bulletins, and not just the ordinary break stings?

Maybe because that Ident doesn't display the words BBC World News on it? I don't know, but it is silly, don't you think!

They do, they have 'BBC NEWS' in the centre, and 'BBC WORLD' underneath.
