The reason why I asked my question, is because my mum (in her infinate wisdom) bought a portable digital satellite receiving kit from Lidl for £70.

It comes in a plastic flight case, and contains a dish, DVB FTA DSAT receiver and all the necessary cables and connectors.

It's designed for people who go caravanning, but it looks ideal for anoraks who want to tune into European channels without having to meddle with the main sky dish which is attatched to the chimney of my mums house.

I was fiddling with my own sky dish this morning, which is just outside my upstairs window. I didn't manage to pick up anything, and I did lose my Sky channels briefly, but when I pushed the dish back to its original position, the Signal Quality and Signal Strength meters shot right up! So my fiddling wasn't completely in vain! Smile

Not sure if your minidish is big enough to pick up a good enough signal from the mainland europe-footprint satellites. I have a second minidish pointed at the old analogue Sky satellite (perfect for 2 free german music channels and porn after 2am Wink ) and it only just picks up the signal.

I'm not moving to west Sussex just to watch porn!

I do have a rather quick Internet connection here in Cardiff, y'know Wink

Does the kit from Lidl include the in-line beeping signal strength checker?

That's the most useful bit of the kit in my opinion, as you just wave the dish about and wait for the beep to be at it's highest pitch.

That's standard in the kit sold for canal boats, where you have to re-allign your dish every time you moor up.

The dish included in the boaters' kit is only about 15cm, but works a treat for most DTH birds.

No, it didn't have one of those beepers. Where can I get a beeper from?!

Hi Equdem, what's the make of your receiver, is it a Comag?

Lidl sold the Signal Finder with the previous sattelite package in November, which was a better and more economic package - a receiver for £50, dish for £15, LNB for £5, finder for £5.

I'll have to enquire of our friends who live on the canal.

Might be a while as they've pottered off to Bath for the festival, but leave it with me and I'll get back to you when they come back up the Caen Hill flight.

And would surely have to realign every time a speedboat goes past or a heron coughs?

VERY surprisingly NOT.

I originally installed it for them and could hardly believe it myself.

I THINK it's because the dish is SO small that it's not all that accurate, so can cope with people jumping on and off the boat, your speedboat and the poorly heron.

When using the beeper thingy, you can tell how wide the point variation can be, before the signal becomes useless.

I'd imagine the LNB area on the setup is quite large, so the dish, which reflects to a different point depending on the angle of incidence, will still be able to focus the wave onto the LNB with a range of angles.

Yes, that makes sense.

The face of the LNB does seem to be pretty big, but things always look bigger when you've got them in your hand, rather than halfway up a wall, as the actress..........
