Audio balance is a subjective thing. But you always seem to complain that the World vamp isn't loud, and not in yer face. Surely that would be distracting from the important thing..... the words, pics and actuality. Just because 24's vamp is apparently louder, it maybe that it is designed that way.
I guess that if the World vamp is consistantly 'in your opinion' low, then maybe that is the correct level for it. The sound person rotates normally every hour, so I think it is you who is incorrect, not the dozen or so skilled BBC sound mixers.
From where I sit in the transmission chain, it always sound fine to me. And believe me, I have seen a lot of BBC World.
And finally, I know that with Techy Peep you couldn't be closer to getting the experts opinion on this matter than he has given.
Maybe you should lend the BBC your golden ears.

At the end of the day, what I say is bound to sound silly because at the end of the day, you are the professionals, and you know how to work Colombus, and I don't! I don't mean to sound offensive in anyway!
Believe me I would lend my ears to the BBC, if you want me to, i'll happily sent my ears to BBC World!
What I am saying is that the headlines bed should be consistant like BBC News 24 and three quarters of idents sound(and not to your face as you put it, otherwise you can't hear the newsreader), to the point, where you can still hear the newsreader, but also can enjoy the bed, therefore the bed will then integrate seemlessly into the idents, this does happen at the beginning of the programme, but not towards the middle!
If only I had a TV card, I would have showed you!
If you get the chance, just look at the middle of the programme, and you'll see what I mean, or if you at home by any chance and have access to World, then watch it and you'll see what I mean!
Sometimes it is done correctly, but sometimes it's not, all I am asking is for CONSISTANCY, and the headlines bed to be set at three quarters level of the idents and not in your face level!
I think we need to put a full stop at the end of your entry Harshy...
Sound mixing is subjective.
It's not a mattr of 'on or off', it's all crafted
One thing to bear in mind when dealing with satellites (ie BBC World), is that they have a tendancy of distorting terribly if sound levels peak at over PPM6. If World transmit anything over PPM6, chances are other broadcasters will get very miffed as it will cross-talk with their audio.
There are no limiters or gates in circuit after the studio, so they've got to be very careful.
But anyhow, getting back to my original point, which is a full stop

Why are you so worried about the correct sound levels on BBC World. Most viewers are only after the news not a music channel so the headline vamp shouldnt be so loud that the presenter has to fight it.
Thinking about it, the vamp of BBC World is much more 'active' in a sense and louder than News 24's . There is a lot more of a beat to the BBC World one, so it would interfere with the presenter if it was too loud.

Oh by the way has anybody seen the full 60 seconds on world yet.
I saw the first 60 to 45 played out in error yesterday. The 60 started at 15 seconds to 9 and so we went into the news at 45 secs!!

The countdown isn't working how it should be at the moment. The automation needs a software upgrade, however, in the meantime it is currently relient on a hefty human input to make it work.

Yeah, OK, then you win!
It's just that in the summer of 2000, when I got BBC World, the headlines were at the right sound, but it hasn't been the same since the autumn of 2000!
Anyway, I acknowlege what you and andyrew have said, and have at least learnt something, so I thank you for that.
I am glad that you and andyrew are in the forum, as it gives us a valuable insight at how the technical aspects work.
I will put a full stop to the matter, and apologise if I sounded offensive.

Erm, I thought my clock were wrong!
I have to admit the countdown, I'm getting used to it now, and I think it's better then the old one in graphics terms!

Put it onto CRV, that's what I say! ha ha
And use 10 year old technology? Don't think so (World is the last channel at the BBC still to use them)
We still use two of them, one on the ABF and the other for playing symbols. But I've got a feeling that by next year we won't be using any.
The countdown will be/is a loop that is an hour long clip, that just goes round and round on a server port. Easy.
