Unfortunately, you're unlikely to see a traditional gallery full of peeps in News stations for much longer. Everyone is going automated, even the regions. In the short term it's more expensive to use automation rather than humans because of the cost of equipment (we're talking £1m +). In the long run though, it's cost effective on many fronts, as it's cheaper to replace equipment such as a video server disk compared to betacams. Also tape stock etc.

I believe it's not too difficult to operate Columbus if everything is working and going according to plan. Put a spanner in the works though & the TD's certainly earn their money - perhaps even more!! They are a talented bunch of folk, but at the end of the day they are still human, and humans err

Actually someone did a study, and when all the costs, including the vast ammount of technical and computer support needed with these new systems, are taken into account, it's actually cheeper to run things in the old fashioned way.
