After the 10 second countdown which started at 25 seconds before the hour, the main ident played -- without announcer -- and carried on until about 10-15 seconds past the hour. There was a pause, then the ident played out again -- this time it lasted around 75 seconds and was eventually overlaid with 'News follows shortly'. After this, the screen went blank, tho' the caption remained. Then the news started and the caption disappeared after a couple of seconds.

Small cock-up? I would have said that was a pretty major cock-up.
Sounds like (from the description) news weren't ready to go on (for whatever reason - may have been due to not being able to load the running order before the top. They would have only just finished doing the back half for N24). That's all speculation though.
Pres. just have to sit and wait - and hope the symbol doesn't come to an end before news are ready.

It did though -- twice !!
(Well, at least that's how it appeared)
Do you know how long the ident can actually last for?

Was anyone watching News 24 at 1.30pm this afternoon? Were they entertaining some loud Japanese tourists in the studio as it sounded like a riot was going on during the weather! (Although could have been a very loud Chris and Val!)
A tiny, tiny cockup a few mins earlier as Chris began the next report something like 'Thunderbirds are go,go,go' and we cut to Val's camera and she's just there - staring! Chris carries on for a few seconds before saying 'no, that's Val!' and various Lady Penelope jokes follow.

So what happend when News24 is not ready to go, given that it has no presentation area?

I would've thought they'd run a couple of trailers or something, or keep the weather going for longer

Yes. One lasts 30' total, and the other is 1'. However, each ident has 30' pre-vision and rumble before the countdown starts (never normally seen) - you may have seen that before the second countdown started.
As I wasn't there today I can only guess what happened, but the symbols are played out on laserdisc and probably just carried on playing when the first countdown finished and went onto the next one.

Andyrew -- there was only the one countdown (before the hour) played during the whole 'event' !. Following this were two of the BBC World animations that are normally announced over -- except there was no announcement at all this time. The first ran for a few seconds over the hour, the second ran for the extended period.

Cheers, Asa
Noise from the Newsroom is always a problem, especially if someone has just cracked a joke! The Weather board is right behind the Newsroom with no solid walls, so any sound can carry onto the floor.
The thing about the wrong cameras is easily done. The automation system when cutting back to the studio cuts whatever is on the mixer preset of the vision mixer. What probably happened was that Chris was 'hot cut' to air, Vals camera put on the preset by accident, and the automation system activated.
Easily done with so many buttons to press and computers to control. If you have ever seen a picture of News24 or Worlds output suites, you'll see that it looks like Mission Control at Houston!
It must be pretty difficult to operate, obviously the guys at BBC World just can't get to grips with Culumbus, maybe they should go back to the good old humans!
