WBR gets tweaked - more of the same... (July 2003)

The WBR got a new look this morning, and I have to say it was a missed opportunity.

Same music, but evolutionary visuals on the title sequence, and apart from that not a great deal has changed. Astons and straps remained untouched, while the stings got the same visual treatment as the new titles, which end with a development of the old logo. Gone is the blurred laptop, replaced instead with a red and black background with dot-matrix-style words and numbers buzzing all over it, and then a 'zoom-in' effect as the WBR logo gets bigger and slams into screen.

Sorry, no caps, but hopefully someone else will pop some up. Apologies if this is being covered elsewhere, but I'm just on my way to work, and not got any time to check!

Anyway... yes: they could have done better, they should have done better - bit of a waste of time really. Come to think of it, I'm of a similar opinion to their efforts on Simpson's World... this culture of half-hearted revamps and dragging of feet is getting most tiresome.

Picture on the left is the new brand compared to the old (right).

In a way I'm glad they have'nt changed the music, its nice and distinctive and dread to think what they would have came up with in its place. Since its looking more in line with Business Today I hoped they were'nt going to adopt the same style of music.

Not too sure about the new logo though, seems a little plain to me. Confused

actually, let me add to this. its bloody awful. its not even in true widescreen, the graphics are tacky and bodged, it looks a lot worse than it did before. as martin says, the logo looks very plain on its own. ugh - terrible. should have left it as it was. i thought business today looked bad - at least the background animation moves.

its more than a wasted opportunity, its a disgrace.

EDIT - although, the market board looks very good.

Well WBR is made by BBC World who broadcast in 4:3.

Well at least it does not look as bad as the current World Sport titles on CNN!

yes but the previous graphics package, used before yesterday, was actually in widescreen - its a step backwards.

why is the world business report so late back in the night nowadays. its the best overnight program on offer, abc world news tonight is utter garbage, hard talk is shown over and over again throughout the weekends anyway. it should be on at 00.30

Watching tonights programme I've noticed they have changed the London-New York board slightly so that the location straps are above the studio shots whereas yesterday they were below and looked a little messy. I must admit that I'm warming more to the titles, they arent that bad and at least are in sync with the music. The end logo remains terrible, I don't see why they couldnt have used more red and blue like in the titles rather than the bland red fading to black backing.

I see Manisha commited the deadly sin of mentioning BBC World on News 24 Shocked Razz - "Your watching the World Business Report, here on BBC World"

I'm not sure about the titles. The way they end with that logo zooming in looks so amateurish for some reason. I also can't see why they are not in widescreen for the UK viewers. Or if not the graphics, than at least the full camera shots. (as we all know that they are 16:9 cameras). They could probably easily tweak the graphics for widescreen, though.

actually, the titles have been made in widescreen, this mornings news 24 wbr output had the full widescreen titles, and full widescreen studio shots. must have been some form of dodgy editing on that 2.30 programme.
