It used to be a ruling, and it may well still be, that you can't follow any programme directly with adverts - or indeed precede one with adverts.

There had/has to be a distinct break between the two - usually the station ident, break bumpers or trailers.

You could not/can not go directly from the end of the credits into a Tesco ad!

We are gradually moving away from the subject, and I sincerely apologise for moving even further away with my post. But I thought it was funny.

One of the complaints regarding 5 News is as follows:

A viewer complained that the item contained two three second long close-up shots of a jar of ‘Douwe Egberts', over which a reporter said:
“Even her special blend of black coffee and the most irritating local radio breakfast show she can find, fails to force her out of the house on time”.
The complainant felt this had given the product undue prominence.

Now, would anybody really care THAT much?

Sorry - back to BBC World.

For the record, BBC World has to adhere to both ITC and BBC guidelines. It is Presentations job to make sure the rules aren't broken, and when news is on the air, we give the gallery advice on when they can and can't take breaks - especially when there are big stories around and news don't want to take breaks anyway.

The BBC World core feed does not contain commercials, but occasionally features sponsorship. For example, the current run of F1 factoids at the weekends.

Earlier this year the transmission suite had facilities added so that an entirely different output can be broadcast to Europe. Before only ads and programmes could be different from the core, but now entirely different back halves are shown on Europe - opted away from the core - at some points during the day.
