We were discussing this in the MoTD thread, but we thought it warranted another thread.

BBC West is to opt from network Grandstand to show Gloucester v Bristol in a couple of Saturdays time.

Local pres from the Points West boys.

Quote:
BBC West is to screen the Gloucester v Bristol Powergen Cup tie. The quarter final match will be live on BBC1 on January 22.

BBC West's David Passmore will front match coverage from Kingsholm, with Matt Pick as reporter.

Phil de Glanville will provide expert analysis and Andrew Cotter will be match commentator.

Coverage of the game will get under way at 2.35pm.

Oh no, not Mr Passmore in the ill-fitting pink shirt, with one sleeve rolled up further than the other.

Is THAT shirt standard sports presenter issue in Bristol, a bit like Susan's doilies?

And he doesn't wear a tie either. Criminal.

The rest of the country gets Northampton v Leeds.

I've never heard of an English regional opt out on Grandstand before is this a first?

BBC West recently opted out at 7pm on a weekday a few weeks ago for the BBC West Sports Personality of the Year.

Vertually all the BBC English Regions opted out of network for their own Sports Personality Programme

Spotlight, IIRC, have done it twice for Cornwall county finals at Twickenham.

According to the Beeb Press Office site, South West & West Midlands are taking the same match too.

Seeing BBC West are doing it, I guess presentation will be in glorious '14:9er' vision, as far as West Mids are concerned !

No, it'll probably be 16:9 - they're getting in a network scanner to do the show.

Knew West Midlands was taking it, surprised South West are.

Not an English region, but back when the BBC had rights to Sunday League cricket, BBC Wales would cover Glamorgan's matches, giving network a convenient second match when theirs finished earlier than expected... complete with BBC Wales Sport graphics.

The BBC's press release

http://www.bbc.co.uk/pressoffice/pressreleases/stories/2005/01_january/12/rugby.shtml

states that satellite viewers will be able to choose between the matches, but noticeably doesn't mention Freeview viewers.

Well, Freeview viewers WON'T be able to choose, as they'll just get their local region for wherever they've hung their aerial.

I think the satellite reference is purely indicating that there are no rights issues, so the match WILL go out on satellite to be picked up by anyone banging in 956, 957 or whatever number the other one is.
