I'm not sure about Carol Kirkwood, she seems to rush the forecasts a bit and gasps her way through it a lot of the time...

Michael Fish... Don't get me started on Michael Fish! They always seem to put him on when its going to rain - he never brings good news - miserable sod!

Jay Wynne - Don't badmouth Jay Wynne... my Dad used to work with his Dad in the filming industry! And his real name isn't actually Jay!

And I think we're forgetting the legend of all weather forecasters... Craig Rich! A legend in the South West!

Carol is good for Breakfast, but maybe not for the other bulletins. She has established herself on the programme, and with all the presenters.

Michael, ....bless..., tried to crack a joke on the One, but he was a bit hesitant, so it wasn't very funny. Something to do with him being a fish in all the rain we are getting. I don't think he has been forgiven for failing to forecast the hurricane. (funnily enough Carol Kirkwood mentioned Michaels failure to predict that hurricane in one of her forecasts, and they all joked that he probably hated her after saying what she did !!!).

Talking of the weather forecasts during breakfast, when either Carol/Helen/Louise are on the roof of TVC, what is that very very high pitch skweal in the background?

It's not the tubes on the Central/Hammersmith and City line (although you can hear them blow the whistle as they approach the Wood Lane bridge curve) so it has to be something very technical.

Feedback from the air-con outlets perhaps.?

Agree with that - she always sounds like she's in the middle of an asthma attack!

In my opinion Rob McElwee and Michael Fish are the best at explaining the forecast and don't treat everyone as if they are a bit thick.

Well I'm with the majority of you guys here. Dan Corbett is by far the best weather presenter. He is a legend. He is totally obsessed with umbrellas. Here are some classic quotes that stick in my mind

Arrow "Don't forget to pop that brolly in your handbag if you're going out today"
Arrow "Driving conditions are going to be bad this evening, so if you are popping up the road, to see granny for instance, take special care"
Arrow "we've got this cheeky chappy low pressure area out in the Atlantic"
Arrow "Look at this trouble causer out here in the Atlantic"
Arrow "well on Monday morning it will be back to this: (Corbett holds clenched fist out in front of him in umbrella-holding action). Yes you guessed it, you will need your umbrella."
Arrow "Saturday looks like the best day of the weekend, so you can pop that umbrella back into the cupboard to dry off. This is the best day to do any outdoor activities, maybe have that barbeque, get granny round for a sit in the garden, something like that!"

Get him on more often!

How do the BBC decide who gets the prime time weater reports or is it done on a rotation basis?? Alex Deakin and John Hammond seem to be flavours of the moment. Sarah Wilshurst seems to have disappeared, and Isobel Lang, who used to feature in many of the BBC's prime reports, on return from maternity leave seems to have been relegated. Or is it simply a rota basis??

Yes I've noticed that, at one time Alex Deakin was the sort of name you'd see on News 24, now he's on BBC1 constantly, same goes for Darren Bett.

And Michael Fish, even though he's been there decades he doesn't seem to get any special treatment, he did the overnight regional recordings this morning!

I agree 100% - he should be on far more.

Just happened to be watching Breakfast with my mum the other weekend and the weather came on - presented by Dan. She'd never seen him before but he had her totally in stitches, especially when he told us it was "not really the day for the bikinis in the garden!".

To make a serious point, when the forecast was finished both of us actually remembered what had been said and what the forecast was - with some other presenters it is quite normal for me to wonder what on earth the forecaster said just seconds after he/she has finished their forecast.

Recently I was exposed to a full set of Dan Corbett weather forecasrs and I have to agree, he is brilliant! "Nice day for the park, don't forget the sun tan lotion", "this blue blob of a weather system is a real trouble maker", "think twice about the barbecue", "maybe a day for some indoor activities with the kids" They all just pour out of him, and he is such a cheerful chappie, he's really very good!

Corbet is a cr*p forecaster, but he's v funny to watch!

Rob and John are my favourites.

On the topic of live forecasts, it is purely a matter of forecaster resources, and the the individual requirement of News 24 and BBC terrestrial. Live broadcasts go out on weekdays at 09:57, 10:57, 11:57, 14:57, 15:27, 20:57, 21:57, 22:57, 23:27 and 23:58. Inbetween, the recordings are updated periodically. When a recording is not updated for a while it is because the poor forecaster is too busy doing other things, such as BBC News at 18:27 and 18:57, for example.

I totally agree with T&W's comments. Whenever I watch a Dan forecast, I actually take in what the weather's going to be.

There was something in one of the articles about the forthcoming new graphics which talked about the problem of 'weather blindness' where you watch a forecast and don't take in anything which is said. I think Dan does really well to make the forecast entertaining without his amusing comments distracting you from the message - in fact they enhance it.

The only other forecaster I find I take more notice of is Rob McElwee, as he takes time to explain the forecast and make it interesting.

EDIT: Just thought, didn't he used to go under the name "Dan Corbett" when he was on in the early days of News 24? Now it's always "Daniel Corbett". Does anyone know why he went more formal?
