Got a rather interesting graphic, as someone forgot to come out of the weather just now.

The weatherman gives a thumbs up to the camera indicating he thought he was off air. Is that rotating BBC logo something that the weather dept would output when there are no forecasts being broadcast?

Everything was fine on BBC One HD.

The BBC logo animation is not specific to BBC Weather, but is a generic animation which ties in with the current BBC Video / corporate logo sequence; part of the main BBC 'masterbrand' look. However its actual usage has varied:

The blue version can be seen on the Nations' feed during similar situations usually where there is either a 'gap' or other timing problem with playout, so is not really meant to be seen. The example you post appears to be from BBC Scotland, so this seems to apply here. The Nations' previous equivalent of this was a simple still of a white BBC logo in front of a blue sky.

A black version of this current sequence also exists. It was used on-air by Network, as a generic (and very sombre) backdrop for their caption relating to the code of conduct for competitions, although that was some time ago now - so that is possibly reserved for serious announcements that do not relate to any specific channel.

I believe it is in the rules of TV Forum that you have to refer to them as "our very own Marksi's" BBC Clouds.

I like that. They should use it on-screen more often. I'm getting bored with the current presentation.

Oh I like that! Am I the only one thinking that it would be a good screensaver?

It would be a good replacement for the current BBC desktop screensaver, which is probably getting on for 8 years old, and still has logos for BBC Technology and BBC Resources. Hm, wonder who I could suggest that to Smile

And SD Network, for what it's worth. That BBC animation is lovely though, shame it isn't given a bit more of an airing. Adelphoi must have produced several edits as that doesn't look like the same as the standard DVD one.

It is, isn't it? I decided to remind myself of it in action - and as some in this thread seem to be unaware of it, you can view the animation in normal speed with it's theme music here:

"Adelphoi: BBC Identity" on YouTube.

The blurb on YouTube says "The BBC asked us to create a track that would challenge and excite their audience about what is coming up next on TV, radio, internet and DVD."

I've seen this used on BBC DVD, but can never recall it being used on air on any linear BBC channels, especially for any sort of coming up promotion. Have I missed it being used somewhere?

I can recall the BBC used to do an "Across the BBC Now" promo for a while many years ago, for some reason I'm thinking it featured screens at jonty angles and didn't fit with any sort of corporate look in use at the time, but can't find evidence of it anywhere... Hmm Confused

Anyway, back to the clip posted above - thank God they still managed to get the warning in about Mrs. Brown's Boys coming up. *shudder*

You've obviously not been looking in the right places Smile

They've had a few over recent(ish) years. I've put them here in what I believe to be the correct order, but not sure on the years.

I think of the 2 above, the red one was used on BBC1 and the yellow on BBC2.

Um, clearly. Oops!

This was the one I was thinking of. Didn't fit with any of the current look at the time, but I think that's why I liked it.

..and I do recall this one too. Did it also used to sometimes feature radio stations too? I'm sure there was a bit of DAB cross-promotion going on at one point.

Thanks for doing the research! I must be getting rusty.

The music they composed was also used on radio trails across the BBC between 2007 and 2008. The tagline was 'BBC, This is What We Do' each trail was specific to a station, for example Radio 1 had a trail using an uptempo version of the music with Jo Whiley talking about broadcasting from glastonbury, whilst Radio 2,4, and 5 live's promos were more sombre.
