The weather forcaster's mic wasn't working after the 5:20 (?) news today, so instead the sound was coming from another mic in the studio and, as usual when this happens, it was hard to hear him. He didn't say anything about it at the start, but at the very end he apologised for the sound problems.

So my question is this - if they do the weather forecasts single-handed, with nobody else in the studio, and with no earpiece.. since it appeared he didn't know about the fault at the start, how would he have found out by the end? Would one of the many screens in front of him have a link from Broadcast & Pres or somewhere, where they could type him a message? I didn't hear any talkback or anyone poke thier head around the door to say it...

I imagine there are level meters displayed on the computer used to link the graphics, camera and mic together.

Weather presenter will have talkback from BBC1 presentation in their ear. The question is why the problem with the mic wasn't spotted whan they were lining up before tx

I asked the very same question over at MHP and turns out they do actually have an ear piece and the director of the channel they are appearing on talks to them beforehand and counts them out.

Obviously must have mentioned it during the forecast - not that anyone who didn't bother to turn up the sound would have heard the apology anyway http://web.ukonline.co.uk/tv.home/forum/emoticons/cheesy.gif

Two things - although neither directly about BBC Weather! Lol!

1) This is about 'Sound' in general. Has anyone noticed that Channel 5 seems to be louder than any other channel?

and

2) What's this MHP Chat? I've been onto the website and can't find out where this chatroom/forum is.

Has Darren Bett been promoted or something?

He was doing BBC ONE Weather all day yesterday and now today as well.
Usually he's found on News 24

Look North's weatherman Paul Hudson and presenter Peter Levy both say Darren Bett is 'dull as dishwater'

MHP Chat is neither chatroom nor forum. It's a combination of a newsgroup and email. Basically you send out your email to a specific address and it gets sent out to everyone on the list (either one-by-one which can result in a lot of emails or by batching them into 2/3 daily single emails with them all in it)

It's a great resource and a lot of interesting chat goes on there - shame at the moment there's a little too many Off Topic emails getting through.

Cheers, Asa

I think that this goes back a few years. When Mr. Dreamboat started work with Look North, he was 'number two weatherman', a bit like how Lisa 'Barbie' Gallagher is now. Darren Bett was 'number one forecaster', so it might be gentle mickey-taking.

I did see that on an old programme about the weather forecast, that there is indeed a sound link from the forecaster to a director/producer of sorts. She asked Bernard Davey if he wanted to shorten a forecast as the news was slightly over-running. Bernard said, 'No, there's too much in it so I'll stick to as it is'.

Hope this helps you!

If you work in the industry Marcus, as you claim to, you'll know faults can occur at any time. Not just before a line-up

That's true Techy. However in this case the forcaster simply forgot to put the mic on. Which should really have been spotted in advance. Sad
