What can...and can't they use? (May 2004)

It's hard to dispute the fact that BBC Weather is the best out of BBC, ITV and Sky. We know all the presenters, have seen some graduate from local TV (eg the lovely Helen Willets) and the graphics are crystal clear and dead simple.

One thing niggles me though. What exactly can and can't they say in the green strap? Last night Helen had FIRST THING as opposed to the more usual DAWN . It's certainly more colloquial and friendly, but is it BBC inhouse style? Is it another example of dumbing down?

If we are to see a move towards more viewer-friendly tags, then how about seeing the following make their way onto our screens

Arrow PUB CHUCKING OUT TIME (10.30 - 11.30pm)
Arrow SCHOOL RUN (8.30 - 9.30am)
Arrow TEA BREAK (2pm)
Arrow HOME FROM WORK (6pm)
Arrow OUT ON THE TOWN (8.30 - 9.30 pm)

Would be interesting, wouldn't it? Wink

How can you possibly perceive this as "dumbing down"?

Have you been reading the Daily Mail? If so, don't. It rots your brain and you'll be a brown-jumper wearing local councillor with the mental age of 173 before you're 30.
