It will be interesting to see what happens in BBC Broadcast - who have recently moved to a new transmission system (that managers may be less able to operate) - so the channel presentation may be interesting as well... (I think that many of BBC Broadcast's employees feel strongly that they don't want to be "sold off" - many chose to work for the BBC...)

Apparently BBC Broadcast staff have been told that they 'cannot go on strike'.... although whether this has any basis in law remains to be seen (I personally don't think it does). Also BECTU membership in BBC Broadcast is quite low - possibly as low as 50%.

A shame because they not only have more to lose, but can also create more disruption

Ah yes, but would Peter join the strike? Who would present then? Erm...... just off to check train times to Hull.....

So you'd be a strike breaker then, and not support the employees of your beloved BBC? Surprised

Mind you if she wants to go to Hull and support the strikers I'm sure she'd be more than welcome. Even if Katherine can't stand with the picket line a donation of refreshments or money would be more than much appreciated.

(however I'm not sure if Hull will be affected - it is one of the 2 regions not affected by the job cuts)

But not just in BBC channels - I think there are around 50 channels originating from the Broadcast Centre (IIRC). Presumably if only those rotaed on BBC channels strike, then management will move people from other channels, or just route more channels through each gallery (they seem to be fairly flexible)

Still, should be an interesting couple of days for the anoraks.

There definately aren't 50 channels - I've heard '50 streams' mentioned, but that includes each variant of BBC channel (analogue, satellite, terrestrial), regional versions of World & Prime and the BBCi streams. Apart from the UKTV channels they have no 'non-BBC channels' and if they did they'd be very unlikely to decide to forfeit a channel - big fines/refunds to the customer

scab

I have a cunning plan......

i wonder if the discontent at bbc hull is partly down to the fact "answering numerous, frequent, lengthy e-mails" isn't in anyone's job description Laughing

Never had a complaint about the length of them - they're normally short, concise and sometimes wounding.....

Always remember Alan Ashton having to read the news on Simon Mayo's Breakfast Show and John Peel & John Waters joining the strike as well.

Who could forget the wonderful Alan Ashton Smile
Suppose this time round you would actually get Rod McKenzie reading the bulletins as he is now Editor of Newsbeat.

There is one non-BBC or UKTV channel... the Community Channel.

well i don't know who wrote that BBC Broadcast have been told they can't strike...both Broadcast and Resources received emails suggesting 'it would be better' if they didn't go on strike. but legally they can't discriminate against union members who go on strike...

and yeah, I don't think management will be able to use the new transmission suites all that well.

But with the three main departments of the BBC and the NUJ and Amicus all going on strike together, I think there would have to be a certain amount of disruption...

Well this is shaping up to be a proper old school strike. Fantastic!
No seriously I suppose the Beeb will be streched but will survive. I'll be interested to see how management cope with the new play-out system from a few posts.
This is indeed shaping up to be a good story.

I would like to see some ropey presentation, such as idents frozen at the start for 5 secs before running. A voiceover being hardly heard under the music as they forgot to fade it down, and then the VT clock at the start of the programme being shown. I doubt we'd get any of this though.

Now if only the strikers could barracade themselves inside the playout facility, this keeping management out Wink
