The disruption would be to live programmes (i.e. news) and anything being made or delivered on that day. It all depends on who strikes, could be standbys all day or relatively normal

Well, that's Look North off air during the strike then! I'll have to sling on an old episode to keep the routine up.....

Bet they're wishing they still had a self-op desk for Peter now! Wonder if they could pull in a CSO curtain and a camera into the second gallery?

Will this strike affect both BBC News (on BBC1) and BBC News 24.

Recent strikes I recall BBC1 bulletins being forced off air, but replaced with BBC News 24.

Breakfast generally had 30 minute bulletins followed by repeats such as Ready Steady Cook.

I guess if BBC News 24 is affected, BBC World bulletins are a likely alternative!

Actually the BBC play quite a large part in producing the Eurovision Song Contest. For example the BBC have designed and operated the graphics for the past few years.

Have they?

The scoreboard was 'BBC Resources' for a few years after the occasion the event was staged in Birmingham. since then the beeb hasn't been involved in the production of the main programme. TV Centre's comms area is a major Eurovision hub.... but that's run by Siemens these days so not affected by the strike. The only diffrence you'd see, if any would be the lack of an english vote.... but that's very unlikely.

But as I said before the strike cannot be on the 21st

Ah yes, but would Peter join the strike? Who would present then? Erm...... just off to check train times to Hull.....

When the technicians go on strike at the CBC, usually managers and other executives fill in. Basically whoever they can get for master control operations and the news programs tend to use 1 camera.

There is no local news, we get BBC World instead!

Not the case anymore.

The BBC scoreboard that was used in 1998 in Birmingham was well regarded by the EBU, and the same team continued to provide it for a few years following (Jerusalem and Stockholm I think used a BBC board)

More recent scoreboards have been provided by Viz or similar I think.

Unless the Turkish unions are on strike I can't see it affecting Eurovision too much. Also the unions have to giove a certain amount of warning - the 21st is too soon.

Turkish unions?

Why Turkish? The Eurovision Song Contest is being held in Kiev/Kyiv this year, with the Swedes (again) providing much of the technical infrastructure and director, vision mixer etc. The lighting is (again) coming from the Czechs.

Eurovision was held in Turkey last year, when Ukraine won...

Saturday 21st May could be a prime target, it being a big day for live programming with both the Eurovision Song Contest Razz and some football match - could a strike knock either or both out??

No it's not. Unions have to give seven days notice of strike action. The joint unions are meeting today, so they can - if they give notice today - start action on 20th of this month.

I remember many years ago when the journalists went on strike (pre-News 24), there were no bulletins on the BBC TV and movies were shown instead. The next week Points Of View got loads of letters saying that they preferred it that way and could they take the news off more!! The strike also affected radio and instead of the usual voices we had editors reading the news. Always remember Alan Ashton having to read the news on Simon Mayo's Breakfast Show and John Peel & John Waters joining the strike as well.
