This morning about 5.00am BBC Two showed Testcard 7 (I think that's what it's called) Why did they do that? Normally they'd just show Ceefax. Anyway Ceefax did come on about 5.30am.
The funny blips are an audio test signal called GLITS (see definitions). They're used by engineers to check that what is being transmitted on the left leg is being received on the left etc. Also that both the left & right legs are not out of phase.
