well all i can say is im very dissapointed!
the bbc instituted a brilliant branding strategy in the early 90's - and refreshed it in 97 ....
but the whole strategy is falling apart - LDN went indevidual, bbc 2 is going in a diiferent direction(if the position of the |B|B|C|TWO text changes - it makes bbc ones idents obsolete)

But surely if the position of the BBC Two logo was to be changed if they were that worried about making it consistent then they could easily alter it on BBC One aswell?

the bbc instituted a brilliant branding strategy in the early 90's - and refreshed it in 97 (the bbc 1 globe wasnt flexible enough).  they were carefull to institute branding in a consistant way in 97 and it has certainly paid off (nationally and internationally) - they did this in a proffesional way too.  they brought local & national radio into line, bbc news, regional news etc.

but the whole strategy is falling apart - LDN went indevidual, bbc 2 is going in a diiferent direction(if the position of the |B|B|C|TWO text changes - it makes bbc ones idents obsolete)

the nature of the two channel's idents was such they could be refreshed every now and then - new ones added, old ones removed ... it could have lasted another 5 years easy!

depending on when they do rebrand - the last chance to see the regional idents will be the 11th or 15th

change for the sake of change - thats all i can say
I couldn't agree more, the 1997 revamp was faultless, and the consistency is excellent - note the way the channel logotype is fixed at the same place, centered at the bottom, in all trailers, menus, slides etc, and then slightly larger, but still in the same place, on idents. Another advantage of having it centered was to make it consistent in both 16:9 and 4:3.

If the channel name is now centre right on idents, but top right on trailers, and goodness knows where on menus and slides, that's another chunk of consistency gone, although BBC Choice and BBC Knowledge have already moved off in their own direction.

The BBC1 balloons and BBC2 '2's have become icons of our age, most channels would kill for this kind of identity, and the BBC are very silly for wanting to throw it all away.

As Terry Wogan said, the BBC's motto now seems to be: 'If it ain't broke, break it.'

I wonder how different it will actually be. From what's been said so far, it sounds as though the 2 itself will survive and it will still be doing interesting things, but in a different place on the screen.

Any chance of a proper globe coming back when BBC ONE relaunches?

Without causing offence, which I suspect I will do, the trouble with forums like this is, whilst it is all so interesting to you, it is also commercially sensitive to broadcasters. Each time one of you let's slip a little leak, regardless of when it will happen or what it is, you don't really help yourselves. It just means that within that broadcaster things get tighter and it all becomes slightly more restricted, so that information doesn't leak out.

It's sadder still that employees want to risk commercially sensitive things just to score brownie points in chat rooms. If the BBC found out 2 weeks prior that ITV were going to rebrand they could easily get in a small re-brand - it's very easy and vice versa. It's all well being anoraks, but TV is full of petty games and spites.

Time to get off my soapbox now Smile

I'm now going to against all my previous thoughts about BBC Generic presntations for all channels.

I think that each channel should be individual and have its own identity.

I suppose the only channel which wouldn't would be News 24 as it has to fit in with the generic news look but they could change it slightly, couldn't they? I think they should - like BBC World - have the countdown then an ident. This could show its individuality.

I'm not 2 happy (geddit?) about the current 2's going - they are among the few flashes of originality on TV today. As regards trailers - check what Choice have done, putting programme details top right instead of bottom centre - will all BBC trailers follow this? And how do you define top right? It's dangerous putting important info in the corner of a screen at the minute because of the 4:3/16:9 switchover - some digital viewers would see the info in the wrong place or not at all, unless BBC create seperate trailers for analog and digital - I think the beeb need to think + realise what's right about the current style rather than what might or might not be wrong...

Okay as much as I want big 2 to stay I think it should be put to rest.. Dog, Paint, Blade, Water, Excalibur & Duck look dated & the 2 isn't going anywhere. Prehaps a new style is needed as the same constant ones are always shown

SAVE THE 2'S!!!!!!!!
No-one will change my mind, I want the current 2's to stay and that's that. If they brought all the old ones back, kept the current ones they ould have a lot more to show, anyone gets intrested by what the 2's do, it always looks like a living thing. I'm glad this subject had attracted so much attention on this forum. If anyone from the BBC read this thread maybe they might learn a few things, it should be up to the viewers, maybe they should carry out a survey and see if the majority of the public want a new look. Like ppl have mentioned the current trailers and corporate branding on the BBC has worked certainly since 1991 and was maintained even more from 1997, if they're gonna do a new look why not do it to all BBC channels at the same time, if they change the 2 trailers and leave the 1's as they are it will look stupid!

To be honest we all knew that they would change them, atleast they are sticking with the 2, they are just clearing all of the old ones out at once and changing the position of the text. Have you noticed that the BBC Choice text is top right, BBC 2 looks to be bottom right, does that mean BBC 1 and BBC Knowledge will be bottom left and top left or vice versa?!?

Do we actually know that the '2's are staying? I mean it's now BBC TWO instead of BBC 2 a few years back... maybe a return for the TWO ident? I hope so, a more peaceful ident would be nice, so many seem to be with lots of quickly changing shapes and colours with loud music. Though I will miss the 2s they've been good, the earlier ones were better IMHO, Blade, Powder, Copper Cut Out, Neon and Firecracker I salute you!
