By widescreen, you mean cropped to 16:9 (i.e 25% hacked off). Thats what happened to ALL pre-october 1997 BBC2 idents that were carried over to the new look.

I don't think they chopped out as much as 25%. I've compared two recordings of Paint, the pre-1997 4:3 version, and the post-1997 16:9 version. On my 4:3 television, the 2 appears larger in the 4:3 version than it does on the 16:9 version viewed in letterbox format. It appears that around 15% was chopped off the top and bottom, and the edges stretched to make it 16:9. Yes, it still means the idents have been butchered, but it's not as bad as simply cropping to 16:9, in which case the 2 would just about be touching the top of the screen!

What a disaster, the more I hear about the new look the more I want to condem the BBC, that stupid ****
ing purple box, it just looks like it's been taken from one of those TV mages and jammed on the ident, there's only 4 and they're all a horrible bright yellow colour, everyone better hate them!
