The number plates in the Car Alarm ident give a clue...

Well, no, not really. They could just have filmed the idents in the UK and used them elsewhere like in Spain, or it could have originally been Paramount Comedy in the UK. No different to filming shows in South Africa that are meant to be set in North America.

They may well have done. However (possibly in post-production), the UK ident has cars with UK plates and the Spanish ident has Spanish plates.

They filmed the Cars ident outside my old work building.

For VmP: Not to get too bogged down in this, but the question was as to which market the Paramount Comedy idents were for (not where they were made). As they have Spanish number plates on the cars, I thought it was a safe assumption that they were for Spain. However...

The agency behind the 2009 Comedy Central idents (which is called Kream) says they were filmed in the UK.

You can compare the two versions of the "Car Alarm" ident below. Its possible they used fake number plates on both versions.

They also seem to be deviating rather too far from the original shape in places.

Isn't that the point? If it kept to exactly the same shape then it would be just like going back to 1991. These feel fresher.

I guess but I think you need a bit more consistency than that. Channel 4's 4s aren't always a perfect representation of the shape (see Blackpool) but I think if you actually go as far as warping the shape out of proportion there's no point in having a symbol.

EDIT : just looked again and they don't seem half as bad as I remembered them 25 mins ago.

You see, I think that's where the latest Channel 4 ones have gone wrong, that it is so warped it's difficult to see. Blackpool and the aeroplanes ones are particularly poor.

The Channel 4 idents work when you can actually see them. Sometimes I think the appearance of the '4' is too fleeting. The Blackpool one is too difficult to make out the 4 isn't recognisable. The aeroplanes one is also difficult to spot because even though it's a 4 it's shot in a perspective type of way. As Chris said, if you warp the shape too much of the blocks, like Blackpool does, you can't see it easily.

Note the UK tax disc holders on the Spanish version though.

And the UK plate still on the Renault.

Those BARCOs are way out of alignment, also.

Is there a comparison of the two numerals? I've stared at shots of both for ages and cant see it...

I can see the differences now, however to me it's still very much the same logo, with a few tweaks, or a slight update of the original.

I suppose you can tell how I'm really not into to TV idents like I was 10 years ago, ever since the ITV regions were binned if I'm honest Razz

Actually, I read that comment as being nothing to do with a visual similarity, but current BBC 2 & post-1996 C4 respectively being in a similar situation in their individual cases: the figures not being used for their original functions.

Yes, that's the point I was trying to get across, though perhaps not as well as I would have liked.

Anyway, I've found what would appear to be a rejected rebrand proposal with three ident concept stills. Two look very interesting, the other bears an unfortunate likeness to an "ITV Hearts" ident.

I rather like those if I'm honest, I do hope that the "2" is kept though, even if it's just in the little tag as I mentioned above.

How about the concept of a new design "2", they tried once before with "TWO" and it just didn't work, with BBC Two it's symbol has usually been the numeral 2.
