BBC 2 & BBC 4 Rebrand Pitch - which we won...

http://uk.linkedin.com/pub/matthew-hill/12/58a/a29

hmm... now, there was talk of a BBC Four rebrand way back in November 2010 (the channel controller himself brought it up) but that seems to have come to nothing. With no links to Foreign Office in relation to the Eatock developments, I wonder if we are to assume this pitch never came to fruition?

All posts above, starting with #31 by AxG, are correct in some way - casual viewers may indeed think the '2' is the same. Few people pay deliberate attention and will only have a vague recollection of its history, let alone of what is actually on screen today.

I received a lot of flak when I originally tried to explain in 2007 that the current '2' is not the same figure as the 1991 Lambie-Nairn '2' - looks like things have improved, somewhat Laughing

Jonny has the right idea. It's not just the '2' that has changed, it's the concept: it was designed to itself be solid - something that could be picked up, dropped, moved. So being stuck as a 'window' misses the point of what the '2' it is based on was actually designed for. There is very little that conceptually connects 1991 with today,

Paper Cut Out was closest, perhaps - but Lambie-Nairn quickly realised it 'didn't work' and that was the very reason it was dropped early. So that example should have been a 'warning from history' that it was a bad idea - but AMV clearly hadn't noted it when they were coming up with ideas...

Really? The very first batch were almost all a 2D figure on the screen - to me they always appeared as a cut piece of sheet metal; in the case of Silk under a sheet.

Is there a comparison of the two numerals? I've stared at shots of both for ages and cant see it...

That certainly makes it a lot clearer, thanks!

And some people say this place is geeky. Wink

I really think the time is right (arguably over due) for them to move away from the 2 being in the idents. That isn't to say it can not be the BBC 2 logo, but it would just appear on the idents rather than in the idents - and just like with C4 a few years taking it out of the idents themselves could actually help the logo out in the long term and ensure it gets a second wind when the time is right.

The trade off was 8 years of very 'meh' idents in between.

The circles idents were bad, but I really liked the squares idents and presentation, in fact I like it more than the current pres/idents.

It's just my taste really - I like presentation where the logo is at a constant spot on all aspects of the pres, so the idents, breakbumpers and promos could easily flow. It was quite clever.

I also prefer the 2D style '4' logo.

A better example of that I'd say is the BBC boxes, more so when they first arrived. The BBC ONE box would remain in the bottom left hand corner throughout promotions and idents (unless other channels were advertised). I quite liked that.

OH COME ON.

I did like the second phase of that '99-04 package. Not as much as the current one, mind, obviously, duh.

Woah... It's just my opinion. If you think I meant that I dislike the original blocks, I meant I preferred the way the 4 logo was seen straight on during the squares era and during the circles and blocks era, unlike how it is chopped together now with the drop shadow silhouette style.
