In response to some earlier posts; I feel the current boxed logo positioned at the right hand side does spoil the ident in a way the centred striped logo never did.

It just looks untidy to me, it always has done, particularly on idents where the 2 is stationary in the middle of the screen, where I sort of want the logo to 'budge over' to align itself with the numeral. It doesn't help that they stuck the logo in a bright purple box; it would look much more fitting if they did away with it.

Whenever the rebrand (that we have zilch information on) happens, whoever deals with it: you can change the boxed logo, get rid of the one-colour-for-all-idents approach, but for goodness sake, don't drop the legendary '2'. It's been in service for over 15 years, but that doesn't mean it needs to be put down.

Instead, they should take a look at the lot of idents from the bunch they've been delving into recently; and draw inspiration from them. Some of the current set are good, but being so personality-focused now, they hardly take your breath away! Whereas in the early days right up until 2001, it seems the emphasis was on a greater visual and aural impact, filming a real '2' - whether it be metallic, wooden, whatever - and subjecting to various elements and conditions, some of which required complex or awkward devices to achieve the desired effect (remember "How Do They Do That?" in Feb '95?). As far as CG may have come since those days, I think it lacks the 'edge' of a real live action '2', which I'd like to see become abundant again in the regular set, in future.

Yes, again I agree with you on all that you've said. Yet seeing as the 1991-2001 batch were extremely popular (and still are), would it not be cheaper and more pleasing - not just for us fans but for the general viewer - to simply re-instate the old idents with the 1997 logo look? Everyone's a winner surely?

If that was the case, they'd be branded unoriginal.

But would it not be better to be cost-effective than unoriginal? Besides, I think many would complain more if they spent loads on a new, potentially unpopular campaign than if they stuck with a tried-and-tested one.

I was on BBC TWO Scotland, but they went to the Network for the junction (as they often seem to do), and there's definitely still a soundtrack to it.
BBC Two Scotland tend to use the network ident and announcement unless there's a reason not to (content, timing, or a different programme)

I agree again with these comments. As you mentioned to me before, Ice Cube looks less CG than the rest and as a result looks more realistic and in fact is probably one of the better produced idents both visually and with the soundtrack. The only problem I can see is that the live action Two has all ready been done and therefore I doubt that it would be successful if remade.

Or maybe introduce a new batch, in an evolved style of 91-01?

Despite the trumpeting it got on Liquid News, it's quite clear the current branding is seen as too restrictive. Why else are they bringing back the classics? I'm not convinced any channel would bring back an old look to save money.

Come on BBC2, please. Just imagine:

I know I've made a balls of that, but it would be great to see a pre-1997 ident of the 91-01 set make a brief comeback.

I really don't see a problem why BBC2 shouldn't bring back old idents, but they have only bringing back 2000- idents, predator (introduced 2000) and Xmas 2000 (Winter Olympics) so maybe the further we get in the year and more events occur may be we might se the odd 1991- gem

These old ident choices are designed to fit in with a particular theme; hence we will not see any of the somewhat more 'serious' idents from the era that have less distinct theming (Catalyst, Excalibur, Wave).

They'll have to choose to bring back old idents proper if we want to see some of the better known/more popular choices, that came before 2000 (I should think Dog and Firecracker are towards the top of that list).

I understand "Predator" has been renamed - it is now referred to as "Venus Fly Trap".

Well, what's in a name?

Is this the first time an ident has been renamed?

I don't see the point really - and why change the name of an ident that will probably no longer be used now the Chelsea Flower Show has ended?

No, it's not the first time... the old Christmas symbol was renamed when it was dusted off for the Winter Olympics... and Fish was renamed Flipped Fish after it was 'flipped' to reveal the small fish that had been hiding behind the BBC 2 purple box. There may well be other instances of symbols being renamed, just can't think of any more right now.
