Really? I think the original set were really of their day. Seeing them on screen today they just look out of place. They were created to replace something that was deemed to be high-brow... but look like that themselves now.

Yes, I do think they're timeless (some of them at least). They look out of place today because a solitary example of one of them has appeared after a 13 year absence during a period of different style presentation. You see them as of their time because you remember and associate them with the early nineties when they were on TV. They're mostly live action and show timeless objects and materials. If the 1991-2001 set never existed and copper cut out was revealed today, you would not be saying how '1991' some metal with sparks flying off it is. Still, if you find that high brow and think the rather dull but okay 'TWO' was a good presentation era, we have rather different angles of perception and tastes.

Yes, the first time I've seen them in 13 years was on TV the other week Rolling Eyes

It's difficult to work out what has aged about them, I think it's just their design style - shiny and angular using closely shot real objects. These days things are brighter and flatter, there's nothing out there I can think of that is like the original 2 idents, those who copied the idea moved on years ago.

Of course not, but that doesn't mean that it would be done today. In 2013 that design concept would be executed very differently, it would have multiple fast cuts for a start, brighter colours than the rather sombre cyan and a longer more up tempo musical score.

I didn't say anything about 'presentation era' whatever that means. It - the TWO logo - is a design classic, just as the '2' that followed it was too. It is of it's time too of course, and like other ground breakers like the 2 and Channel 4 had 'me too' versions, most notably LWT's solari idents

Ah. Smile

I guess the "true" 16:9 re-edit has the 1997 logo burned on it?

Daft question but is it up to the on-duty announcer to decide which 'Classic' Idents get shown on screen?

Wonder if a clock will ever appear, or is that asking too much! Smile

Seeing as it is BBC Two, probably.

Depends where you are talking about. On network it's likely to be the Network Director who makes that decision. In the nations, the announcer is also the Director so, on a technicality, yes. Wink

The idents are scheduled by Media Planners. These days Network Directors in England are unlikely to change an ident from the one scheduled, however in the Nations (as Steve says) the Director (Announcer) will often change the scheduled ident to one which may better suit the junction.

BBC Two have just shown the 1964-1967 ident:

It appeared to be a recording as opposed to a recreation.

I do like the fact they've bothered to centre it, even if it is zoomed in.

And Copper Cut Out makes another appearance on network. To note, Northern Ireland haven't been running these.
