Just saw a 1967 BBC2 Colour version of the menu. Has that been used before?

The 'TWO' white style menu slide was used on BBC One between the regional news and Doctors today to promote the Afternoon Classics strand.

Would it have hurt to take a 5 minute trip over to TV Ark and look at a real one?

You mean something like this?

I think sticking a white "2" in the corner of a silk background and listing the schedule wouldn't have done much. The casual viewer might've thought BBC Two had another re-brand rather than saying, "Oh, that's the old menu from the early 90s". At least the "TWO" and =2= symbols look different enough to indicate some sort of nostalgic strand - not when a relatively similar '2' is still being used.

What did Northern Ireland do, they have been a bit more authentic in their approach I believe.

Indeed... Looks like it was created from memory instead of using a proper reference image. Using the current '2' template sort of defeats the idea of a 'classic' style... Comes across as a rough approximation of what a menu might have looked like.

The interesting thing is that they could have made it more authentic by not trying to create the 'Blade' itself, reconstructing the 1991 slide design in widescreen - which is what I would have expected a 'Blade' themed version to look like:

Fairly straightforward example there, but based on an actual slide... I'd have preferred to see them take this sort of approach.

Yepp - that looks a lot better. I think the placement of the 'AFTERNOON CLASSICS' title is the most annoying thing about that other recreation (if you can call it that).

I agree about the placing of the title, but the rest of it looks good. Why should it be authentic? It's just a bit of themed presentation, not a documentary

Because doing something a bit more authentic would have been no more effort and would have looked better. It wouldn't be an issue if what they created was in keeping with the present scheme with a nod to the past, or even if it just looked OK. What they created is inauthentic, doesn't stay in-line with the present scheme and just looks bad.

Nice idea, horrible execution.

That's more or less what I had in mind when I heard Blade slide too, perhaps even without the classic white 2 in the corner (although its obviously better with).

The actual one used just has me worried there's a Flash recreation waiting to be played. "Fine" as a one off though, yeh, sure, whatever... NI?
