70s drama The Pallisers is being shown from this coming Monday (5th May). I wonder if this will fall under the Afternoon Classics strand?
I asked this very question to BBC NI pres dept last friday, when I first noticed it in the schedules. They told me they were not sure (at that point in time) whether or not it will be regarded as an AC prog.
Just looked at BBC Two (Network) and the Tent Ident was used so looks like it's not going to be an Afternoon classic.
I suppose their reasoning here may be that for a programme to really be considered part of Afternoon Classics, it would need to be a programme which has seen several repeat runs over the years, and for which many would regard as a ‘classic’ or an ‘old favourite’ etc (Cagney and Lacey, Are You Being Served?, Allo Allo! etc all seem to fit in here). I don’t know whether The Pallisers would truly fit in with this kind of criteria(?).
Having said that, Vintage Antiques Roadshow has (inconsistently) been shown with a retro ident during the other recent AC programming, but I think this may have happened simply because, although it would not be considered a classic or vintage programme by any means, it does have 'Vintage' in its title, and was the very next programme after the others at the time, and so it would be permissible to show it with a retro ident as well(?).
Edit: Surprisingly, BBC2 Network have decided to go retro today, and showed the 1974 ident with today’s episode of The Pallisers! I will, therefore, certainly keep an eye on BBC2 NI to see if they may show the occasional retro ident with this series. You never know.
