The only thing I hate about the new idents is the BBC Two logo trapped in that box! I don’t like that at all! The BBC Two logo should in the style of the BBC One logo and on these new idents it would look better in the centre, not on the left hand side!
However, I'm not so sure on the logo. Do they really need a logo on the idents at all?
I mean, the '2' is such a strong symbol, that is it really neccesary?
That wouldn't be a good idea. It's OK if the logo doesn't appear until partway through the ident, but there should be an appearance of the corporate logo simply to identify it as coming from the BBC. People who have been watching BBC2 for years will immediately associate the 2 with the channel. People who have never heard of it (like little children, people getting a TV for the first time or people coming in from other countries) will be completely alien to it. It could be BBC2, ITV2, or for all they know, just "Channel 2". That's why I think corporate branding is a good thing - it tells you "This is
BBC
2".
Corporate identities are not always good, but in this case, as long as the logo isn't too intrusive, it's OK.
However, I dislike the box. Perhaps the logo could still be in the corner, but in a BBC1 style?

Static slides are quite sparse these days, you're only really guaranteed to see them ahead of Schools programming, but I'm various interested to see what the trails will look like too...Pure speculation, but perhaps either could be similar to what we saw in the recent press pack, with the 2D angled 2's of various colours?
Nothing different about the size there at all. I should have made clear that when I say the shape of the 2, I mean the proportions, the size and outline, and it's probably best to compare and blend the outlines of two different stills to see how it differs more from previous incarnations.
The Glass 2 above has normal proportions, and the outline of the 2 which defines the shape of it is exactly the same as the other 2s of the time.
I would say the reason why idents like Water, Optic, Shadow, Crystal Ball don't count as examples of the 2 not always being the same shape is because these were
deliberately distorted
through various means and were meant to look warped.
But there is no reason for odd-looking 2s in the new set because none of them are in environments that would cause distortion, and they aren't being intentionally warped, yet their proportions look more inaccurate than any of the other solid/cut 2 idents from 1991 to present.
Could be down to Lambie-Nairn not working on it, they came up with the '2' and all sequences for the past 16 years have featured the numeral looking essentially the same. I think they should have been responsible for this next stage really, but for some reason they were struck off the list (anyone ever find out why that was?) so I guess that's just how it goes...
If you get what I mean, so at the head of the '2', the inside edge doesn't curve or come forward as much making it seem less top heavy and it looks more evened out like the figure that I remember.
Is that a game of spot the difference or something!
Really, it just doesn't matter at all!
Typhical TV Forum, one minute complaining all the idents look the same - the next moaning the "2" in each ident isn't 100% identical in every BBC2 ident ever made!
Hear hear Brekkie! You have to remember that someone will have cut that from a piece of wood so it isnt going to be 100% perfect. Its almost identical, you really are splitting the smallest hairs there Paul.
