I was quite surprised seeing Big Read Long before Newsnight the other day though that was the only junction I saw (looks like I missed quite a good Network pres day).
I didn't realise there was a short version of Fire but isn't there one of Self Portrait that's rarely seen (like Drum Short)?

Actually there are three versions of Self Portrait, all have been used on BBC TWO Northern Ireland. Long, medium and short.

Does the same go for Remote? I think I've seen:

- Long version which starts from beginning pre- sprouting arms

- Medium version starting where the '2' shakes the remote

- Short version starting where the '2' crashes into the screen

It may just be that the Nations vary in their use of versions. I know I've heard the 'jingle' at the start of some non-long versions, whereas similar others have no jingle. Confused

Off the top of my head I can't tell you how many versions of Remote there are, but 4 or 5 seems reasonable. I can only speak for NI where they've all been used at some point or other. To be honest there's not much difference between them - generally only the starting point is different.

I know it is a bit early to be posting this but how do you think BBC2 will send off their yellow idents?
Do you think there will be a yellow ident montage, ala BBC1, or a bog-standard final showing of fish-the first ident to be shown when they launched way back on November 18th 2001.
I came up with what i think would be a cracking send off for this era of '2's.
A special variant of 'Domino' should be produced as the final ident. Basically, after all these years, the '2' finally falls the correct way knocking over all the other '2's. The camera then rises above the action to show that the fallen '2's have produced a gigantic figure '2'. There then could be fireworks and the robotic '2' instructor cheering/clapping. I know it would be asking a lot for an ident that would only have one showing but IMO it would make a spectacular finale, what do you think?

Why does this always happen?

TV Forummer 1: How will X send off their current idents?
TV Forummer 2: I know, they might do a montage of all the idents!

Its ridiculous. When has a channel ever done it? Did they do it with the dancers? No. How about the other 2s? No.

BBC One did it with the Balloons and the Dancers, I cant remember what (if anything) BBC Two did.

Well I missed the dancer's I admit, but still, its very rare but still everyone expects them to do it.

You're only right with the last one. The very first 2 ident that was shown - Paint - was the very last one into the last programme of the day, an adaptation of The Moonstone by Wilkie Collins. The balloon had a normal "through the night now with BBC News 24" on Network, a proper farewell in Wales, and montage in Northern Ireland. The dancers had a montage on Network.

Took the words right out of my mouth - I must confess I'd also thought of this, although without the fireworks and the 2s in a certain arrangement. Perhaps the background could be different - a change of environment to somewhere other than that yellow studio may help the 2 fall the right way... Smile

Perhaps someone with 3D CGI capabilities could produce a mock? I'll be digging out my copy of Bryce...

Haha, very good idea!

Given Network gave the BBC 1 dancers a good send-off, it's now more likely the same could happen with these BBC "2's", although I wouldn't say the probability is too high.

Also worth mentioning re: Dancers montage, Northern Ireland had a re-arranged and chopped-down version of the montage which ended on a partial show of Skateboarders (cutted abruptly away to N24), so not quite as polished as Network there.

I didn't think the Balloons got a montage, at least not on Network. IIRC, they just ended with the Docklands ident. I've got a feeling that Northern Ireland possibly did have a montage though.
