BBC Two: new idents from Sunday 18 February

I almost feel ashamed that I've forgotten how brilliant each and every one of those idents were. Sure there's some duff ones but even those are good. It's the haunting and moddy music too that makes them all that extra bit better. My favourite was Catalyst. Both visually and audibly stunning.

Lambie-Nairn also made Carlton's (plus the HTV adapted version) last set of idents, which were the best at the time on ITV, and I'd say they're better than the current ones by far. They were still mentioned on the LN site until recently... strange how both them AND the BBC1 dancer ones have gone off their site, but the BBC1 Baloon ones are still there.

Yes...IMO, Catalyst, Wave and Excalibur were all top quality sequences in the final batch; proving that even into the year 2000, superb idents were still being added to the set.

Then late in the following year, they went; meaning the last lot were seen for roughly only a year and 10 months before being replaced...

The cycle of taking a few old ones out everytime new ones are added is a great way of ensuring the set can go on indefinitely, without ageing; although I doubt branding agencies are too keen on it if it means their broadcasting client won't need to pay for another rebrand until at least a decade later.

The only examples I can think of where L-N has done such, is the old BBC2, and S4C with the rather good "dragon-esque fire breathing objects" idents; although the latter seems to only stick to a set few these days, of which the new ones aren't as good.

Quick point and I'm probably going to embarrass myself something rotten here...but just before Extras or Mitchell&Webb tonight I saw a quick short animation of a T spelt out with a latticework of hexagons....is this a preview of BBC Two's new look...or is it something to do with Torchwood?

BBC2's Thursday night comedy has been great; must-see stuff.

Tonight's episode of Extras in particular was absolutely cracking; and the ending... !!

Yes, I was suprised there was no mention of that very special cameo!

I thought there were two surprising cameos one was Ronnie Corbett and at the end with Moira Stuart!! Didn't like the first series but love this series and Stepen Merchant is scene stealing gold!!

I notice that the old Predator ident was used before gardners world, is it possible that BBC Two is relaunching tomorrow as well?

extremely unlikely. if a press release for bbc one's idents came out a week or two ago, then surely a few days notice at least would have to be given for bbc two.

unless they want to keep it under raps, after all BBC One is the main channel. They may also be trying to suprise the viewing public.

Do you reckon that could happen? I thought there would still be a press launch for new BBC2 idents.

The BBC-2 new Idents will not be launching until next year.
