When these people judge "Channel of the Year", do they really take into account the number of hours it broadcasts a day?!

That's precisely the point I was making!

The crux of my argument is that broadcasting 24 hours does not make one channel better than another which shuts down overnight. Nor on the other hand, should a channel be frowned upon if it doesn't transmit round the clock.

What rubbish - noone cares if it is on overnight. If all the shows on BBC2 were on BBC1 then it would have won channel of the year and that would have been the case whether they kept News 24 and the sign zone on at night or not.

There's a Channel Of The Year version of Domino (Long) as well. It was shown at 1845 this evening.

I think the point Simon is making (and I think you really all do know even though it's "kewl" to pretend not to in order to slag SL off) - is that, by coincidence, BBC TWO doesn't seek to offer something to the "kewl" demographic 24 hours a day, but sticks to its editorial policy, and that these two facts are not just coincidence but both products of that policy.

After all, why show Top Gear at 2.30am when no-one will be watching it? That's what sky|one might do if it had historically been their show.

I think also another important part of the point is that BBC TWO still manages to maintain viewer loyalty at key times of the day, rather than treat programmes as "content" which is just shifted around the schedules as a feeder for a video recorder or to be watched when not being able to sleep, unlike many satellite channels.

Perhaps that's something to do with it being Channel of the Year. Yes, BBC ONE may have come close (because many of the same things can be said about ONE), and I'm sure all the mainstream channels were hotly contesting each other. BBC TWO just pipped them to the post, and yes, it isn't "because they close down", but it goes to show that a channel doesn't have to be trying hard to justify its existence 24/7 in order to be worthwhile.

Didn't News 24 have "Channel Of The Year" on its graphics for a while?

Who awards this "Channel Of The Year" thing anyway?

It said 'RTS Channel of the Year', if I remember correctly.

RTS = Royal Televison Society (website here - awards page)

unless, of course, the award was given by a member of our very own forum

Row, I don't think you thank anyone if you give the award. Very Happy
