Interesting to see a BBC Three trailer for 'In the Flesh' being advertised on, and showing as coming soon to BBC HD. It was a standard black background Three trailer with the title in white and coming soon in pink, but the BBC HD logo in the bottom left.

As it starts on 17th March and is, I presume weekly, it would make its final episode's broadcast date 31st March - on what will by then be BBC Two HD. Hopefully this is a sign that other non-One/Two programmes will get aired in HD.

By the way, can the 2012 in the heading be changed to 2013?

I found that trailer interesting too, as it seemed to be promoting a series run that will presumably outlive the BBC HD channel it was being promoted on. The first episode, and I assume the second, is scheduled to be simulcast on BBC Three and BBC HD. Surely that won't be possible for episode 3 on BBC Two HD, as it would mean simulcasting on Two and Three? Perhaps then a late-night repeat is the only way it will get its HD showing.

Or maybe "BBC HD" will come to mean the online or iplayer showing?

The BBC have suggested that iPlayer HD will be an outlet for HD content commissioned for BBC Three and BBC Four.

The iplayer HD streams are very good, much better than SD via Freesat/Freeview, and not that much worse than HD via those broadcast platforms, although I am lucky enough to have a 30 Mb/s domestic internet feed.

The trail uses a BBC HD logo NOT associated with BBC HD channel, i.e not a diamond shape.

That is the box logo though they usually use I'm sure for simulcast shows.

The Sky iPlayer implementation is close to as-broadcast quality 1080/50i HD, and the SD stuff definitely better than 576/50i SD as-broadcast. Think SD is around 1.5Mbs H264 and HD around 8Mbs H264 judging by the file sizes. (Though it's a download implementation, not streaming, though you can start playing once enough has downloaded without waiting for it to complete) The interlaced video is a bonus (I think the Red Button Freeview HD streams are also interlaced)

The iPlayer webstreams are significantly lower than this - closer to 2.5Mbs 720/25p - presumably because they are streamed not buffered via a download.

You do need to be a Sky subscriber for this though. It amazes me that they (both the BBC and Sky) got away with this. It is the kind of thing that I would have expected the BBC Trust to have put a stop to.

No, trails usually say "Also on BBC HD" which includes the diamond BBC HD logo. Top Gear Africa special trail being a prime example.

"This" meaning having to be a Sky subscriber to get Sky Go (or whatever it's currently called)?

Edit: ah, you probably mean about it being the only place to get such high quality streams of BBC HD channels...

I don't suppose you know anything about how the deinterlacing is handled, do you?

Correct: it was also used for the Genius of Invention trails on BBC HD.
