Don't think it's going to happen. There are no "plans at present" to change any of the BBC's idents, for any channel. Looks like the Autumn at the earliest is when we could hyperthetically expect new presentation.

I think that the BBC are very conscious that spending money on rebrands could be perceived to be insensitive against the background of DQF and redundancies.

Yep, I'd have thought so, just unfortunate that it coincides with a particularly low point in BBC presentation history. And that's not to forget the frittering away of resources on fixing things that weren't broken, halfway and less than halfway through BBC One + Two's traditional campaign lifecycles, in 2009.

There's another option. The BBC could use bits of old presentation to refresh their current sets, as NI have. Not sure how BBC One could do that, but BBC Two certainly could.

Erm, what exactly are you referring to? Unless I've missed something fleeting, BBC TWO NI haven't been using any bits of old presentation actually on screen within the sets.

They've had their own idents for both channels, from the Titanic season - but these are new sequences.

Yeah, sorry, bit misleading the way I worded that. I was referring to their use of the soundtrack from Copper in the Titanic ident - my point being that stuff can be reused from the archive to bring costs down, be that bringing back Wave Day with a box, or just using the soundtrack from Steam as part of a new ident made cheaply in-house.

I'd rather see the BBC HD idents tweaked and turned into BBC2 idents than the BBC2 idents remain. That said though I'll probably rarely watch BBC 2 HD once it's BBC3/4 content is dropped - there isn't much from BBC2 I watch on BBC HD, and all the films I've been interested in haven't been available on BBC HD. Is it likely such films will be in true HD on BBC2 HD, or just upscaled?

They need it though. Both BBC ONE and BBC TWO are looking extremely tired IMO. BBC ONE's look is in its 7th year, which is nearly it's longest lasting presentation if I'm not mistaken?

Either way I reckon both channels need a dual corporate rebrand (a la 1991/1997) and the sooner the better!

Well perhaps they are, though BBC 1's actual peak time programming is pretty good, and popular at the moment, and that's what's important.

However BBC 2 needs to get its arse in gear, it's like a spare room full of junk at the moment, seems to have totally lost its direction.

Monday was the sixth anniversary of the current 2 idents, but I don't believe that a rebrand should automatically be required just because the current look has reached a certain age. With BBC1 I don't think the circle idents are particularly tired; should they still be around this summer they will overtake the 1991-97 and 1974-81 globes to become the longest lasting idents since the channel became known as BBC1, though the 'bats wings' ident of the 1950s may well have lasted even longer.

Some of the 2 idents do look tired to me - Sunroof in particular, though I think Mirror and Seascape still hold up well (despite the poorly shaped 2 in the latter). The problem I think is there simply aren't enough of them; the initial set of idents were never added to, only taken away from. Though I wouldn't mind seeing old idents return - I'd personally be happy with a wholesale return of the 1991-2001 set - the style is quite different from the current ones and I don't think they'd sit very well alongside them.

The dreadful idents that ITV have come up with recently is a reminder that the presentation on all BBC channels could easily be far worse than it is at present. I struggle to imagine where BBC1 could go next, and any replacement for the circles may not necessarily be an improvement.

And I agree that politically, rebranding could be just about the worst thing the BBC could do at this present time.

I disagree, that may have been the case a few years ago but in the past few years it has far more of a cohesion about the schedule. Comedy now seems to be consistent, you can spot a BBC2 sitcom - the new Sue Perkins series looks exactly like it belongs alongside the likes of Rev - whereas not long ago it was going at the same kind of thing as BBC3. Drama has improved in leaps and bounds, they've had some massive hits, Line of Duty was a big success. It's the first time in a long time it's felt like a proper channel.

They can afford to do it with News though. Wink

It's not really a rebrand of news though, most of it is quite similar to before - they are just tweaks and updates to the existing package to tie in with a move to a new building and studios with HD broadcasting.
