Does anybody know what font type the BBC two '2' is. I suspect it is Gill Sans the same as the bbc logo but I cant be sure because it doesn't look bold enough

It definitely isn't Gill Sans. I'm almost certain it's not part of a font set at all, instead the '2' shape was designed by Lambie-Nairn specially for the idents.

There was a special 'How Do They Do That' feature in 1994 about that infamous '2'. Lambie-Nairn definately made up that distinctive font himself, with its sharp-edges and thick design.
