digiguide and the dtt were suggesting that bbc two should have closed between 1.40 and 2.00 - and yet it seemed like there was a filler programme instead Confused

or was there a programme over-run earlier today that i am unaware of?

I don't know if it did, but it's possible the Snooker could have over-run.

Yes -- lady from network told us at 1am that the film was dropped due to over-running snooker, replaced by the Days That Shook The World thingyo.

Were there not any 40-minute editions?

I could have sworn Ceefax said earlier this evening that the film would have started at 10.10pm (subject to Snooker) and then News 24 on at 00:05 until 01:00 ready for the Learning Zone to start. So not sure why there would have been a potential close at 01:40?

Speaking of which they have just gone straight into News 24 at 00:01 so without the headlines stings etc.

The Learning Zone only starts at 1am on Tuesdays (late Mon). The rest of the weeks it's 2am.

Hmmm.

Well now far be it from me of course to be requesting ceefax disappear -- but since BBC Wales on 1 has a similar gap of twenty minutes at the moment, from 0245 until 0305, the lovely Desmond Tutu woman has brought us some [quite awful] tinny music and a red menu screen.

Why then, shouldn't BBC2 use their twenty minute opportunities to have a similar menu thing showing us what else we could find on the BBC's channels through the small hours [and of course on LZ]?

Surely this is the reason why ceefax isn't used on BBC1?

No!!

It's far better to have a text alternative to News 24 running. That way you can find out about something in the news almost instantly without waiting around for half an hour for a report on News 24.

And I think the reason why BBC Wales puts up a caption is because they don't have access to a Ceefax generator.

IIRC the only nation that does have access to one is BBC Scotland, as they can get it fed directly from the Ceefax generator in London.

No, it's an editorial decision. Ceefax is the filler option for BBC TWO, whereas News 24 is the option for BBC ONE. The view is taken that it is a pointless exercise to opt to News 24 for 15 or 20 minutes.

BBC Wales does have the same access to Ceefax as the other nations, and have in fact use it a good many times on BBC TWO Wales when joining Ceefax before network. It's just then a case of waiting for network BBC TWO to get to their Ceefax output and cutting across to it. The feed is not a Ceefax 'generator' as such - it's the vision output of the rolling Ceefax on a clean-feed circuit - in 4:3 format of course.

NI has it's own Ceefax generator, but it's rarely used. Television as a medium is better suited to programmes. Wink

This was the original schedule:

Snooker until 22.30
MOTD2 @ 22.30
Rugby Highlights @ 23.20
Film @ 00.10
Ceefax @ 01.40
Learning Zone @ 2.00

However the snooker overran by 50 minutes so here is the revised schedule:

Snooker until 23.20
MOTD2 @ 23.20
Rugby Highlights @ 00.10
Days That Shook the World @ 01.00
Learning Zone @ 02.00

Typically this occured on the day where the new ident was introduced and I was expecting a full showing ahead of Ceefax but, unsurprisingly, didn't happen.
