The music has grown on me!

Matthew Jackson with a slight pause towards the end of his announcement bidding us farewell; perhaps it was done on-the-fly, so to speak.

it's nice to know what the current Xmas idents are called, but it got me thinking...with the fact that these idents don't specifically refer to Xmas in their name, does that make it *ever-so-slightly* possible they could be kept for use on suitable occasions, other than Xmas?

Similarly, all of last year's Xmas set has seemingly now been discontinued...but we saw Ice Cube, which was originally an Xmas ident, during 2005's hot weather period; could it make an appearance same time around '06? And if we get heavy Snow fall, we could see Snow (the ident)?

Those 2 idents are in quite a weird position, as they are special idents, yet they aren't; rather than being selected based on programme content, the weather dictates if and when they show up.

IIRC it was myself that came up with the idea of using Ice Cube as a summer ident (and purely out of coincidence two weeks after I started the thread, Ice Cube appeared on our screens). I do agree that it is strange to have weather idents, but saying that I do think it is nice to see them, considering that they aren't going to reappear at Christmas with the new one.
However, I can't see the current Christmas idents being reused as, unless there is a Christmas special in the middle of the year or there is some astronomy programme, there is no specific use for the current set of idents.

Typically I missed this morning's closedown - was it any good and which ident was used?

BBC TWO Ident - Comic Boing; Duration 20''

Matthew Jackson did the continuity, con-at was around the 5 sec mark:

"News 24 continues on BBC ONE now, and here on BBC TWO we're back in business with CBBC, from 7.... <slight pause> So, thanks for your company..and, well I hope to talk to you again soon!....for now....goodbye. " <ident fades into Ceefax slide>

Isn't it technically "Winter Generic"? The Comic ones have no seasonal prefix...

Yes but I didn't want to start an argument about how the politcally correct BBC had called it "Winter" instead of "Christmas", or get questions like "Does this mean the ident will be running until the spring?". Wink

But if the ident was named "Winter" for the same reason as many councils have substituted the C-word, it only reinforces my view (and that of the Daily Mail) that the BBC is institutionally PC.

Or perhaps the designation has more to do with the fact that the symbol runs for a period well beyond a single day.

In any event it's not worth getting your knickers in a knot.

If the BBC is jumping on the same bandwagon as the Red Cross, Oxfam, and not to mention several jumped-up town hall penpushers, I think that's worth getting one's knickers in a knot.

What's wrong with calling it Xmas Generic, Xmas Comic Stars etc!?

If they have substituted Xmas/Christmas for Winter, the only reason I can think of is that it doesn't have any references to Xmas related things in the ident...On the other hand, the ident over on ONE has a huge great Christmas Tree as the centrepiece -- now if there's no mention of Christmas/Xmas in the title of that ident, I'd be really quite worried.

I suspect there's too much Daily Mail reading going on in the Lux ton household.

Well it's not is it? Or have you not seen BBC One's wall-to-wall 'The One For Christmas ' promos? The use of the word Winter for the name of an ident only used internally is hardly the work of the Queen of Narnia now is it?

Only by me. And they often make valid points about BBC self-promotion.

That's such an urban myth. There's hardly anywhere that ever did that, and even then it died out very quickly in a hail of ridicule.

Even if some idito CofE bishop did manage to make the front page of today's Manchester Evening News (slow news day, I guess) with an appeal to the country to keep our culture and our Christmas.

*sigh*
