I guess I can answer CN's question now - they used Predator!!

Nothing on a rebrand yet - but if they continue to bring (superior) classic idents back from the dead like this, maybe we'll just end up seeing the current set running for a while longer, interspersed with the occasional old gem to surprise us and give us a break from the norm.

Which one is Predator?

Look in the "BBC TWO Predator ident" topic, I put a little picture up there; it's the Venus Fly Trap '2'. It should also be available for viewing in-motion on a few TV pres sites.

Ice Cube has made it's return.
I first saw it into Ceefax this morning where it went announcerless instead having Ceefax music starting in the middle of it.

I've just played back an overnight recording and seen it! It's a bit short though -- the muted announcer/Ceefax music during ident has occurred before IIRC.

Something I've never noticed before about this ident -- the '2' inside the block appears to be a different font during the first 25/26 frames!!

Notice in the opening second, when the trapped 2 slides in from the right side and hits the camera, not only is the ice cube "frosted", but the numeral actually appears to be a Gill Sans 2, not the usual figure!

Straight after the ice cube has collided with the screen and slows down, the proper '2' replaces the Gill Sans one, and the ice cube is no longer frosted.

Here is the Gill Sans 2:

And here are some screenshots from the 1st second of Ice Cube; judge for yourself...

That's because it's backwards! Razz

Nah, it does look a bit odd...

Perhaps it's refraction from the ice?

That might be an explanation but all the idents are meant to be CG, which brings in a point raised that this might actually be a real model Two in a real block of ice as it looks more realistic than the others and also the reflection of the light through the ice looks realistic.

As for the matter of 'the changing Two', if the ident is in fact real then the reason for the changing colour might be because of it hitting the camera (as its position is with the bottom of the cube above the bottom of the camera) and also the way the light shines on it at this point makes it appear darker. However if you look at the frame before the dark Two, it appears that it is in the normal style (from the low quality capture I have found) which again suggests that it may in fact be real and just the way the block is angled to the camera on the first frame gives the illusion that the Two is in fact Gill Sans (as once the Two is in motion it appears normal)

Anyone actually seen Ice Cube since yesterday's Ceefax showing? It might've just been a case of mistaken identity...to be used, but not just yet.

What I meant was - perhaps the CG model included some fancy ice refraction effects Smile

Incidentally, it's apparently only available with 'Subtitles' burnt in.

That sounds odd. But easy enough to make a no-subtitles version from the master, isn't it?

Rare ident Fire was used twice on Wednesday I noticed but into programmes I didn't think it was suitable for - Working Lunch and Newsnight. I thought that the reason Fire was a rare ident because it wasn't appropriate for certain programmes (eg. current affairs, news etc.) just as Morris Dancing is.

OK, any explanations for the Christmas 2000/Winter Olympics 2006 ident being used into Summer Of 1997 - certainly made me and the missus go "eh?"! Certainly one of the odder choices, into a summer programme in one of the hottest weeks of the year - assuming it wasn't a mistake of course Laughing

It was Ice Cube in Northern Ireland.
