IIRC they dropped it fairly quickly because it looks absolutely awful - the balloon looked very dodgily superimposed, just not convincing at all. Don't remember seeing it much if at all after the first few days.

I'm sure I remember reading that they had actuallly flown the balloon over to Australia to create this ident. Is my memory that dodgy?

Yup, it was a rather dodgy cut-out-and-stuck-on job.

Crying or Very sad

Clearly old age is catching up with me. Wink

Thanks for the clarification.

There was a video explaining they had to fake it as there are very strict no flight rules around sydney.

Yes but there's faking it and there's faking it badly.

A still of one of the stings on the homepage, I see!

Anyone have an idea of what day this presentation will finish? I would think it'd be once the Olympics is over but I don't know when that date is!

I think the games end next Sunday (26th).

The eclipse one over Stonehenge was even worse, I didn't think the Sydney one was that bad. I always preferred the computer enhanced ones to the balloon just flying over a British landmark, Bungee was a particular favourite.

We makes me wonder why they just didn't add the purple box to the earlier 2's and add to the set rather than ditching them entirely? Muppets!! Rolling Eyes

Well, I think the reason was, that they wanted new idents (stupid beeb) and later decided to have a new logo, not the other way round, if that makes sense.

OK; Cheers for that.

Using computers and superimposing the balloon allowed for so much more flexibility and more visually stunning idents. Without them there would have been no idents such as the Olympics (the shot of Sydney itself was nice even if the balloon itself looked a bit dodgy), Eclipse, or Walking With Beasts.

The idents introduced in 2000 which involved people, saw various new upbeat versions of the soundtrack. Before the Irish Docklands Skateboarders that we see today, there was the Balloon-era Skaters on the halfpipe -- with a decidedly more 'groovy' sound.

Bungee was great, nice fitting soundtrack too (I had a clean track somewhere; albeit with a small chunk cut out presumably where the announcer would've spoken). The set should've still been around today if it wasn't for the decision of a certain former controller - it's clear that the dancers have bombed in comparison to the ident packages that have come before it, they are far more limited, and have become stale far quicker than the predecessors, IMO.

A large video here of the Winter Olympics ID. Becky Wright's announcement overran the duration slightly... About 7 secs shorter than the Xmas 2000 version, this was possibly done to fit the soundtrack length(?)

What I've never understood about the Olympics 2000 ident is that other computer generated balloon idents, like the ones at The Needles and Blackpool Tower, look totally convincing even today. Why such a botch job for the Sydney ident?
