Their original excuse was that Grandstand was an outdated brand, which seems hypocritical when MOTD has been going for as long as it has.
I'll even take an inept ex-footballer with a headset describing what's going on off-camera on a Saturday afternoon than see two people try and auction off an old lampshade.
Ah, no. My point was I can only assume it's cheaper to have some people talking about sport than it is to show it, yet I'd find that easier to watch than the stuff BBC One put out in the afternoons.
The BBC already do that all afternoon, Final Score runs on the red button from half past two. So you can watch it, while other people can watch Bargain Hunt instead. You would be surprised how many people want to watch Bargain Hunt seven days a week, and complain loudly when it isn't on - the same people who complain when Casualty isn't on one Saturday out of fifty.
You could argue they could put Final Score on BBC1 all afternoon when they don't have any other sport but that means that they'd have to keep moving it when there's other sport. There's no point in having repeated or unimportant sport all Saturday afternoon just for the sake of Saturday afternoon sport. There's no comparison with Grandstand and MOTD when MOTD still has a purpose and an audience.
Yes, they went up to 2010 in the original run and then after that did new episodes, broadcast every New Year's Day, for 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014. But they didn't do one for 2015, alas.
