Their original excuse was that Grandstand was an outdated brand, which seems hypocritical when MOTD has been going for as long as it has.
I'll even take an inept ex-footballer with a headset describing what's going on off-camera on a Saturday afternoon than see two people try and auction off an old lampshade.

I think you've just described Soccer Saturday!

I did. Unless Jeff Stelling has a load of lampshades he's trying to shift.

Ah, no. My point was I can only assume it's cheaper to have some people talking about sport than it is to show it, yet I'd find that easier to watch than the stuff BBC One put out in the afternoons.

I was watching the anniversary World of Sport retro that itv did a while ago on You Tube. Something like that with a diverse range of minority sports (and almost sports) might work again.
BR
Seems to constantly be Bargain Hunt and Escape to the Country on BBC and Jeremy Kyle and Murder she Wrote on ITV at the weekends.
A real case now for the return of Grandstand considering the BBC are happily abandoning live rights which did screen on the website in favour of limited rights airing sometimes days later. The Grandstand model which a decade ago was deemed outdated now seems fit for purpose once again.
The array of property and auction programmes are knocking me sick, frankly. I find it sad that we were once blessed with the presence of Grandstand on a Saturday afternoon (this is coming from somebody who isn't even that big a sports fan anyway) and now we get Escape to the Country or some rubbish.

They still show the rubbish even when there something else to show like Snooker.

There was a whole channel for that - ESPN Classic. It folded. As did Sky Sports Gold.

ESPN Classic only folded because BT bought ESPN/ESPN America and it wasn't part of the deal.
Didn't Sky Sports 3 take the place of Sky Sports Gold? Don't know if it was because of limited space or not, but in recent years they show classic programming such as 'The Sky Sports Years' so it's not all gone
I'm pretty Steve in Pudsey was proposing a modern version of World of Sport for the present day, not more retro episodes of it

The Sky Sports Years was for their 20th anniversary IIRC. Haven't noticed whether or not they still show them.
