I've just had a look around the new 'asylum models' website. They were responsible for making the physical models for the original 2's. I had always been under the impression that Woodpecker was CGI, but the website photos suggest otherwise. Take a look, it shows some of the 2's in their raw, physical form http://asylumsfx.com/work/bbc-2-idents

It wouldn't be too hard to implement either. I mean, if I can do it to a semi-decent standard, I'm sure the BBC could.

That is literally the extent that needs to be gone to in order to better the usual happyland trail style. It's clear, it's classy, it doesn't perma-damage your retinas.

I like the style better although I don't know what's going on there with BBC Four's font.

I just tried to use the same font as BBC Four normally use, which as far as I can tell is Helvetica.
The weights are different on the trailer endboards that they normally use.
I should also point out that the blurred backgrounds are placeholders where either footage from the show would be (97 style) or a properly designed graphic.

I think the kerning is tighter on the normal one.

I thought that was going to happen.

Yes, but reading the Broadcast Now article, it does appear the new in
Idents will just be used as an extended branding device to specific programmes/programming seasons.
As opposed to a half a dozen new stand alone idents to be used in front of any programme at any time.

Not sure how far rebadging idents from 1993 has contributed to the cementing of a "contemporary image" but hey-ho.
Would be nice if they commissioned an actual, physical "2" robot as they did back in the day:

...as opposed to the tacky computer generated stuff most (all?) of the special idents so far have utilised, which just doesn't transmit the same charm.
And also maybe take a crash course on sound design... and decide on a consistent "2" shape going forward... etc, ad nauseam.
Edit: A lovely webpage on how the 1999 Robot Wars '2' was conceptualised and executed.
