Is it just me or would the pre-2009 endboards look better with these idents?

And here's more or less how the Network versions would've looked if the box had remained the same size and position as the 50 Years one, so we can ponder just how they managed to muck this one up yet further.

I think this would look better than the NI text that they have now.

Whilst I'm no fan of the teal box and have never been a fan of any of those style of boxes since they were first seen in 2001, I don't think the Northern Ireland version is particularly great either. The boxless 'box' logo's always been weird to me and I have never gotten used to seeing it on promos. Ideally, they need to either go back to the 1997 style or something along similar lines to it.

Still, kudos to BBC Northern Ireland. They're showing some of the very best idents of the era that most of us watching network are not afforded.

So why are these idents being used? Is the 'current' package that bad the BBC have reverted?!

They're the next best thing to a total rebrand.

When they replaced the music on the old "Windows" idents, and shifted the box from left to right, the whole package turned into such an inconsistent mess that a reversion was the easiest choice, bar a total rebrand which could be worth thousands or millions of pounds.

That and a lot of people have been pining for the 90s idents back for the best part of eight years, so they're probably back by public demand too. I'm not complaining Very Happy

I hated it when they messed about with the windows ident including the promo end boards etc. It used to be actually quite a nice overall design, until they started using horrible bright coloured backgrounds, dodgy fonts and text sizes/positions, adding terrible new ident additions (football tag anyone: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gIY8lEQOc4g ) and just made the whole package a complete mess.

It is of course nice to see the old idents again and I am happy they are back, but like others have said, why ruin them with the clunky big box logo stuck at the bottom in what seems to be such a random place. I know its the position where they used to place it on previous idents, but with these idents it looks so wrong. Make it smaller and move it over slightly so it at least aligns with the 'Subtitles' tag. Although why they still need the subtitles tag I don't know, its just more clutter. If they really want to keep using the subtitles tag, put in on at the start of the programme like ITV does.

I don't know what was going on inside presentation around 2007/8 but it always struck me that someone *really* didn't like what they had bought, swiftly derailing any chance it had by trying to retrospectively twist it from subdued and vaguely sophisticated to light and characterful.

Leaving aside the folly of attempting to pull off such an extreme mood shift without changing the central set-pieces, the idents, the execution was so unbelievably botched it's just amazing it lasted as long as it did; tightening funds being rightly saved for more important things, I'd guess.

And even more incredibly, it just kept getting worse from each stupid, pointless, nonsensical change to the next... to the point where I seriously began to wonder if someone was trying to get it taken off air any which way.

The wonky text motion tracking was probably the peak.

Was that one of the Channel of the Year idents?

That's the one, take your pick although my favourite was the one that used Calibri. http://theident.gallery/player.php?id=BBC2-2012-ID-COTY-GROYNE-1

I can see what they were trying to do with the 'Channel of the Year' text added like that, but it just looked awful. I think the worst was the Sunroof one, the way the text just suddenly spun into place like it was late arriving. What would have looked better is if the text was basically 'fixed' to the roof of the car and moved perfectly in line with the roof/window slowly moving.

And yes why was the Seascape one using a completely different font? Very weird, but then again, for BBC Two at the time it wasn't such a surprise really as they did that sort of thing often, well I guess they still do.

Just a quick MS Paint job of the concept of a central logo similar to 97-01, though with remnants of the teal box...

Or they could just go wholesale back to the 97-01 style.
